A mobile money customer withdrawing sh 1 million already pays out sh 6500 in taxes alone. Now, the government is proposing a 10% final withholding tax on commissions earned by mobile money agents & telecom service providers

Did you know that the cost of mobile money transactions in Uganda is multiple times higher than bank or ATM charges? Yet the majority of users of this digital service are low income earners of households whose transactions rarely exceed sh 50,000 at any one time

This driver has exposed and perhaps mostly emphasized what we all know that the roads are small. @UNRA_UG @MoWT_Uganda would you help put an end to road carnage! Separate and widen the lanes! Also is the money for the other meters being swindled or the roads are designed this small? If yes, by who? What’s their motive?

I was on Mbarara highway in November and I kept telling my husband that this road is too narrow, look at how close these cars are bypassing each other. Its time we ask questions about the original plan on these highways, I remember back then during construction and widening, the road would appear dual carriageway only to end up as a single. The same thing they did with Kiira Kasangati-Matugga road. Who is responsible? @MoWT_Uganda

Avoid Naguru Police HQ. Rush for fuel at the new Shell across the Ministry of Justice has clogged the road. Some clever fuel manager working for a ministry issued an order for fueling of GoU cars at this station ( with predictable consequences)

The tax proposals currently being scrutinized in Parliament look to expand Uganda's tax base while raising additional revenue but the increase to sh 1,750 per litre for petrol to sh 1,430 per litre of diesel, will affect the transport sector & economy

The Sovereignty Bill MAY be shelved, but only because the key constituencies that move serious money will move away. QUICKLY. If the Chinese, Indian, Turks/ some other diasporas stopped any inflows into Ug, it doesn't matter that you have oil revenues, the economy would collapse

The sh 200 excise duty on petrol & diesel per litre is being misapplied. Excise duties are typically applied to specific projects to address negative externalities & influence human behavior such as taxing alcohol & cigarettes in a bid to reduce or stop it's consumption

A loan should not only build infrastructure but also local capacity in terms of injecting the cash into the local economy, citizenry empowerment/training, sub-contracts and many more. A loan that involves importing everything from labor-equipment-cement isn't a good loan. However, China isn't to be blamed in anyway because China does what you have asked for. Most African governments don't know how to negotiate loans and how they want the loans to benefit their people. Loan is not just about delivering the infrastructure, it should be more than that.

Uganda received $2.5 billion in remittances in 2025. That is 3.8% of our entire GDP. Over 16 million transactions, average value of $152 per transfer. The Protection of Sovereignty Bill 2026 now says anything above UGX 400 million roughly $100,000 from a foreign source in a year requires written approval from the Minister of Internal Affairs. Think about who is affected by this Ugandans in the diaspora sending money home, NGOs running health and education programmes, creators earning from YouTube, Spotify, and international brand deals and businesses with foreign shareholders or investors. The bill also defines a “foreigner” to include Ugandan citizens living outside Uganda. Your cousin in London sending money home could now be classified as a foreign agent. The government says this is about sovereignty and transparency. Those are legitimate concerns because foreign interference in domestic politics is a real issue especially on the Africa soil. But this bill does not just target that. It hands the Minister of Internal Affairs discretionary power to approve or reject any significant foreign inflow. No independent oversight and violations carry up to 20 years in prison. The Uganda shilling was the best performing currency in Africa last year. Bank of Uganda credited remittances and NGO inflows as part of the reason. We are now proposing to put a ministerial gate on that very money. Someone explain to me what problem this actually solves because from where I am standing, the people who will feel this first are not foreign governments. It will be the ordinary Ugandans. The government owes us a clearer answer than “sovereignty”.

Ugandan Banks Reject Sovereignty Bill, Cite Seven Grounds Ugandan banks, led by @ugbankers Executive Director Wilbrod Owor in a submission to the Attorney General, have opposed the Sovereignty Bill 2026, warning its sweeping provisions could deter foreign investment, disrupt credit growth, and undermine financial stability through foreign funding limits, regulatory overlap, and broad “agent of foreigner” definitions.
