The Knicks play the Magic tomorrow in the Semifinals of something called the NBA Cup, with the winner getting to the "Championship." Every game played in the NBA Cup counts in the standings BESIDES the Championship game that does NOT count in the standings. This puts me in a tough spot as a fan bc I am rooting for the Knicks to win, but if they do lose tomorrow I will be ok with it. I do NOT want the Knicks playing in an exhibition game in the middle of the season when they have REAL NBA Championship aspirations - I have real injury or stamina fears. I doubt having fans semi rooting for their teams to lose is what Adam Silver had in mind when he started the In-Season Tournament, this gives the NBA Cup NO buzz. The winners of the NBA Cup gets a bonus of $500k per player so it means something to the players but as a fan, why would I care if a millionaire gets richer? Sure, you can argue that an actual "NBA Title" means "nothing" too bc I don't get anything "real" from it and players get bonuses too, but it is not comparable and here are some reason's why: - NBA Title's make family memories - They are what every team strives for - Life long bragging rights - Stimulates the economies of the cities and brings everyone together - Changes lives of players more than an extra paycheck that goes on long after they have retired The NBA Cup is not memorable and changes nothing and does nothing, it is even played in a neutral site place in Vegas that has ZERO buzz/aura - it is an overall flop. If you want fans to get into the NBA Cup, make the Championship game mean something. For example, if you win you get an extra W in the win column and if you lose you don't get the loss.. this way you are going for SOMETHING. So yeah, I can never root against the Knicks but if they happen to lose this game tomorrow I won't shed a tear, I will probably even be relieved.
