@CarrieRosePR Recent thinking also recommends rather than asking a candidate what behaviours they have shown but talk about how they would approach something now. And, of course, being transparent and sharing interview questions with candidates.

YOU'RE DOING INTERVIEWS WRONG!!!
When conducting interviews, we have a long list of questions we typically ask applicants. And what you should NOT be trying to find out is skills, experiences or qualifications but actually... behaviors.
What behaviours have they shown whilst doing that task, experiencing that problem or opportunity - of which they can bring to your company
The behaviour you show, is the thing that makes you a really valuable person. An A player vs a B player.
A common question include:
๐ Tell me about a time a project failed
This is where you get to see whether they display behaviours such as grit, tenacity, ability to simply figure it out. Self reflection, patience, team work, courage, confidence.
Another question I almost always ask is:
โ have you got any questions for me?
And if they say no, I don't think I have. I never give them the job.
Curiosity is one of the most important behaviours truly successful people have. Successful people want to know everything about what they're doing, they want to know what works, what doesn't, what good or bad looks like, what KPIs do you care about, what will be my biggest challenges.
Those are the people I want in my business.

Dear @premierinn why oh why canโt you actually put plug sockets next to the bed. And while Iโm at it, your hotel in Holborn is ropey as ropey can be. Looks like someone has been fighting with all the woodwork.

I lost my mumโs engagement ring in Manchester recently. Itโs not worth anything but has huge sentimental value. Is there a central lost property in Manchester? #askManchester #Manchester

Imagine you start a new job and they send a strict dress code, down to the colour of your socks and style of your shoe. They also send you a list of equipment which they say you must have every day. Some of it seems a bit strange - two green pens?- but off you go dutifully to Smiths and equip yourself.
On the first day, youโre lined up with your colleagues and inspected. Anyone whose clothes arenโt exactly according to the dress code is told theyโll have to work an extra half hour. Same for any missing equipment. The penalties add up - wrong colour socks and missing protractor? One hour after work.
Youโre a bit concerned at this because you had arranged a lift home and if you have to stay late youโll miss it. You check your clothes and equipment, all seems okay. You pass the check, but the woman next to you has the wrong shoes. Sheโs distressed at the news that sheโll be staying late - she had plans later. Tough. She starts worrying about how sheโs going to get new shoes to avoid the same tomorrow whilst also staying late at work. You donโt know how to help.
You get into your office and look around at your colleagues, but thereโs no time to chat. On the whiteboard is a list of expectations for the day. You must be on task at all times and this will be monitored through your computer. Toilet breaks are limited to particular times and youโll be queuing because itโs the same time for everyone. Eyes must be kept on your computer and this will be tracked. You must sit facing forwards and not slouch. You must use a regulation ruler whenever you read a document. If you break the rules, youโll be kept after work the same day.
Youโre told that if you get too many โafter worksโ then youโll spend a day in the Quiet Room where no one will talk to you for the whole day and you canโt eat lunch with your colleagues or go to the toilet more than twice. You start to feel a sense of unease. Youโre worried about whether you can comply and what will happen if you start gazing off into space or rocking on your chair.
The office is very quiet. โIsnโt it lovely?โ says your manager. โPeople here appreciate our structure and clear boundaries. Youโll do the best work you have ever done here because no time is wasted. Weโve set it up so you donโt have to worry about making decisions, you just do what we say and concentrate on your workโ.
You think perhaps this isnโt the right place for you, but they remind you that youโve signed a five year contract without a get out clause. There are no other options. You are powerless.
What effect would that have on you? Would you be happy and relaxed at work? Would you be motivated and doing your best for those five years? Might you feel anxious and trapped or resentful and angry?
And why would we think it would be any different for our kids?
