Happy to share that our paper "How quota cuts, recreational fishing, and predator conservation can shape coastal commercial fishery efforts" is finally published in CJFAS, with @RArlinghausFish, Sean Pascoe, @BirgitGassler and Simon Weltersbach cdnsciencepub.com/doi/full/10.11…

Our main result suggests that commercial fishers redirect effort in the presence of high seal densities, while there were no clear indications from cormorants and the result for recreational anglers was mixed. @leibnizigb @BAB__AT

@GuyPeer3 @SebastianLakner @MoritzFritschle Do not forget that the Baltic coastal fishery is in massive decline (at least in Germany) since 1990. Pressure from predators (in addition to fishing, pollution) does certainly play a role in declining fish stocks, although the exact amount is certainly uncertain

@SebastianLakner @MoritzFritschle The issue is much more severe. The Baltic Sea's ecosystem is already at a collapse level due to the combination of overfishing, immense amounts of pollutants (especially agrochemicals), and climate change. Blaming cormorants - a natural component of that ecosystem - is insane.

WTF! Really? Did Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Latvia really propose to shoot cormorants to recover fish populations in the Baltic Sea? And next they will shoot woodpackers to save the forests (plantations), and develop cannons to shoot at the sun to halt climate change?
