About 20 people, mostly elderly, were doing synchronized exercises in the park. This went on for 15 minutes. Same time every morning. On my third day I went down to watch. The exercises were simple, stretching, arm movements, bending. Nothing intense. After they finished, I asked one of the participants (who spoke English) what this was. She said "morning radio exercise. It is a tradition in Japan. Started after World War 2. We do the same exercises all across Japan at the same time every morning." I asked if it's required. She laughed. "No, no. Is voluntary. But many people do it. It is a good way to start the day." She said she's been doing it for 30 years. "Every morning except when I am sick or traveling. It is part of my routine. Without exercise, the day feels wrong." I asked if younger people do it. She said "not many. Mostly old people like me. But some young people come with their grandparents." She pointed to a guy in his 30s exercising with an elderly woman. "That is her grandson. He comes every morning before work to exercise with his grandmother. It started 5 years ago when my grandfather died. He didn't want her to be alone." She said the exercises themselves aren't the point. "It is about community. Same people every morning. We don't talk much. But we see each other. We know everyone is okay." She said when someone stops coming, people notice. "We check on them. Make sure they are not sick or need help. It's like... quiet caring." She invited me to join the next morning. I did. The exercises were easy but being part of that group felt good. Everyone exercising together in the early morning light.
