I wasn’t planning to post this but it’s Father’s Day so if there was any time it’s now. I didn’t really tell anyone but dad (62) unfortunately passed away last month. My dad loved his work so I figured it would be fit to share some of it. His thing was civil engineering. He worked on many bridges in tunnels in the US but his proudest achievement by far was his work on the SF/Oakland Bay Bridge. It somehow became tradition that an ironworker secretly welded a small, custom steel troll sculptures in a secret place into the original bridge to scare away evil spirits. So naturally, they had one made for the new Bay Bridge. It was my dad and his co-worker that raced up there on the night of the opening in 2013 to place the troll before the first cars drove past. That was my all time favorite story from him. I wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am now without him. In fact, I am starting full-time on the Golden Gate Bridge retrofit project with many of his former co workers next week. 🌉
