I love that both Mercedes and Willow leaned heavily into their history together. Back in 2023, they main evented an NJPW PPV, where Willow walked out victorious while Mercedes left with a serious injury. Willow’s career skyrocketed from there. Then Mercedes arrived in AEW, and the first person standing in her way was Willow. Both women went on to accomplish incredible things. Mercedes collected over a dozen championships across promotions, but the one prize that kept slipping through her fingers was the AEW Women’s World Championship. She challenged for it twice and came up short. Then Willow ended Mercedes’ historic TBS Championship reign, sending her away for six months. While Mercedes was gone, Willow suffered an injury of her own, forcing her to withdraw from the Owen Hart Cup and relinquish the TBS Championship. Mercedes stepped into the tournament in her place. By the time they met again, Willow had climbed the mountain and become AEW Women’s World Champion, while Mercedes had won the Owen and earned the right to challenge for the title she wanted more than anything. For Mercedes, this is about finally overcoming the one woman who has haunted her career: the woman who beat her twice, left her injured once, ended her record-setting championship reign, and always seems to have her number. For Willow, this is about proving that her greatest strength has always been her resilience. No matter how many setbacks she faces, she refuses to let them define her. She stays positive, keeps fighting, and keeps believing in herself. Becoming World Champion isn’t just the culmination of her journey; it’s proof that optimism, perseverance, and heart can carry her through every obstacle. That’s what makes this rivalry so compelling. Mercedes is chasing redemption, while Willow is fighting to prove that the same unwavering positivity that got her to the top can keep her there. Long-term storytelling at its best.
