The last time BTV had a temperature reading -30° C or lower was Jan 14, 1999. From the earliest records in the winter of 1940-41, there were generally about 7 such days each decade, but we haven’t had such a cold day in the first 23 years of this century. #vtwx

Oh, and I only had to borrow a modest amount thanks to generous grants from my college and work-study jobs that were rewarding beyond the wage.

@CaitlinPacific When my father was as old as President Biden is now, he skied 100+ days and was writing his second novel.

Someone was railing to me that Biden was unfair for office because of his age. I said that people age differently, and that my writer father worked up to the day before he died. But then I remembered that when he died he was younger than Biden is now...

@TheSteve0 I find it interesting that, upon rebranding to Open To Debate, they seem to have dropped the before/after poll, which was a feature of the Intelligence-squared debates. I cannot find an account of that change on their website. opentodebate.org

@EthanZ Eschewing the ecological fallacy, your lifespan depends on how active you are, how you eat, and your genetics. Cultural differences including political leanings may impact the distribution of lifespan of, say, 1,000 of your neighbors.

I can't stop staring at this map. There's a 20 year gap in life expectancy between deep red areas of the US, like the southeast, and blue areas like New England. Your lifespan in the US relates directly to where you live and how it's governed. latimes.com/business/story…

David Wagner has catalogued hundreds of caterpillars across the U.S., many of which had never been documented before. “The implicit argument of his work is that every larva matters, no matter how small, squishy, and unassuming,” @ElizKolbert writes. nyer.cm/zIhoL2w

@GordonEdes I sat quietly in the Applebee's in Schenectady watching that. I was happy, the Yorkers around me were not!

It's been a bad week on twitter. People have been unpleasant and unreasonable, and my biggest fear is that too much of that will make *me* unpleasant and unreasonable. So I really appreciate the kind words and the support. I will try to do the same for others. 🙏
Dr. Clare Brock@Clare_Brock

@GregVidua @TamarHaspel Your comment to Tamar is pretty absolutist and doesn’t indicate a pragmatic view of what is likely or possible in our current political climate. I’ve been following Tamar for a long time and read her work. She deserves respect and acknowledgment, not to be used as a strawman

It only dropped to a minimum of -15° F (-26° C) this morning, still colder than any other Feb 4 since 1978.

If it reaches -17° F (-27° C) Saturday as forecast for Burlington #BTV, that will be the coldest Feb 4 since 1978, when -19° F (-28° C) was recorded. #vtwx
