I wrote this thread in response to the post pictured below, which has since been deleted. I wanted to share the thread here in case it helps others understand why we still need to care about COVID when organizing 👇🏼

@mwxhitaker (1/) As some1 who’s COVID-cautious, I want to provide context for #1. The gist is: a) we’ve lost a lot of our layers of protection, b) the best way to protect the vulnerable is to keep up precautions, c) COVID is still harmful, and (4) COVID ties directly to leftist principles.

You are going to have your bills go up, your wages stolen from you, your air polluted, your economic opportunities dashed, and the ground you live on poisoned, so that Israel can achieve an absolute hegemony over the Middle East and seize the land from the Nile to the Euphrates.
Branko Marcetic@BMarchetich

Very, very brief sample of things Trump/Vought are planning to cut to pay for this latest Middle East war, incl. several programs for renewables & public transport just as Trump is making gas-guzzlers much more expensive to run.

New developments in Gaza in the IDF strategy there are flying under the radar. But they shouldn't be. The army is moving past the so called "yellow line" to sever the part of Gaza they have thus far not occupied by taking over the main lines of communication: 1) My friend Nizar today reported that when he approached Deir al-Balah: "I noticed something unusual at the beginning of the road… cars were turning back, there was noise, pale faces, and the sound of gunfire. Then I saw a tank on top of the hill, and I understood that the occupation was approaching Salah al-Din Street, possibly to close it or because there was an operation in the area. Gunfire was random, and drones were hovering in the sky." This has been confirmed to me by IDF sources. The army has taken over Salah al-Din Street, the most crucial artery in Gaza. 2) They are targeting aid convoys. He said, "here was also a vehicle belonging to an international health organization whose driver was killed, and it was carrying a foreign medical delegation." This has been confirmed. It was a WHO vehicle, and its driver Majdi Aslan as killed. 3) Salah al-Din Street is the primary north-south highway and the "spine" of the Gaza Strip. The takeover of this road has devastating consequences. This road is the only viable route for heavy aid trucks carrying large quantities of food and medical supplies like baby formula. By blocking it, the military has severed the connection between the aid entering from the south and the families in central and northern Gaza. It has shown it is willing to kill rather than allow essentials like baby formula to be delivered. 4) It also means that towns like Deir al-Balah are being turned into isolated pockets. When the artery is blocked, local markets cannot be restocked, which is why you are seeing prices become unbearably high and essential goods vanish. 5) Because of this development, the WHO has officially suspended all medical evacuations today because they can no longer guarantee safe passage on Salah al-Din Street. 6) While Israel claims there is no ban on formula, they have classified essential feeding supplies as "dual-use" items, causing them to be held indefinitely at crossings like Kerem Shalom. The combination of blocked roads, closed crossings (like Rafah today), and limited supply has created a man-made crisis where the cost of formula has skyrocketed. The most telling detail here is the dual-use classification of baby formula. It reveals the logic of the entire strategy: Israel is not using blunt force alone, it is using administrative and infrastructural mechanisms to achieve what a formal siege would achieve, while avoiding the legal and political exposure that a declared siege would bring. Controlling the road, classifying food as weapons, and closing crossings are individually deniable, but together they form a coherent system of starvation. The WHO suspension is the canary in the coal mine: when the international medical community concludes it can no longer operate safely, the humanitarian architecture that gives cover to the claim that "aid is allowed" has effectively collapsed. Israel is again starving Gaza to death under the cover of the Iran crisis.
Nizar_Gaza_🇵🇸@nizar_almasre

Today, after getting dressed and ready to travel to Deir al-Balah to buy baby formula, I noticed something unusual at the beginning of the road… cars were turning back, there was noise, pale faces, and the sound of gunfire. Then I saw a tank on top of the hill, and I understood that the occupation was approaching Salah al-Din Street, possibly to close it or because there was an operation in the area. Gunfire was random, and drones were hovering in the sky. I saw a car speeding by carrying about three injured people. There was also a vehicle belonging to an international health organization whose driver was killed, and it was carrying a foreign medical delegation. The situation was extremely dangerous and chaotic, so I returned to my place and waited for things to calm down. After the crossings were closed, prices have become unbearably high. One of the most scarce and expensive essentials is baby formula. Many families have told me that their children are in urgent need of it. Therefore, our new initiative will focus on providing baby formula for infants in Gaza. We will wait for two days until the situation improves, then I will try to travel and purchase as much as possible to distribute to families in need. I kindly ask anyone who can help not to hesitate to help the infants of Gaza. This is no longer a luxury, it is a matter of life🙏🫂 chuffed.org/project/149470 paypal.me/NizarAlmasre

I have not seen a single mainstream media outlet give this the attention it deserves. Israel blew up an entire Lebanese town, an ancient place. It should be headline news. There’s footage of it happening. Imagine this was your town, and you saw every building blown up by a terrorist army to prevent you from ever returning. You would at the very least expect wall to wall coverage. Instead it passes without a word. It’s not the only town Israel has blown up. And sadly it probably won’t be the last.

My cousin Katayoon was killed by an airstrike in Tehran on Tuesday. She was a lovely, intelligent mother and physician. Her building was rocked by bombs and she was killed under the rubble. Her husband is in critical condition. This war does not discriminate. Innocent people are being killed for expansionist agendas. This war is not about freeing people or democracy. They have made it abundantly clear that the people of Iran are irrelevant to them. We are resilient people but war can kill the best of us. Pray for Iran and do what is in your power to put a stop to the bombing and the potential ground invasion that is being . Speak out, vote, protest and BDS.

It’s critical to shut down this dangerous narrative that ICE is undertrained. Law enforcement training teaches cops to fear the public and kill civilians with confidence. They don’t need to be trained, they need to be tried.
Matt McDermott@mattmfm

Reminder: it was recently reported that ICE slashed officer training from five months to 47 days to flatter Trump’s ego as the 47th president. Recruits showed up without full vetting, with criminal records, failed drug tests, not meeting basic standards. thedailybeast.com/ice-slashes-tr…

A little girl named Hala stopped me today and gave me this mask. She said, "You're handsome, you shouldn't get viruses. Wear it and stay healthy." I told her, "You're the beautiful one, really." She made me happy.

They’re trained to escalate, kidnap, abuse, kill & attempt to cover their illegal actions. If you watch videos of them, they move like they’re at war with noncombatants. They always aim for heads. They always have their weapons ready. They take cover quick. Stop this bs narrative

This is really one of the more galling parts of this discourse every time it pops up; random American civilians are supposed to be calm, disciplined, ice-water in their veins, but armed agents of the state are entitled to take life on the basis of “feelings”

a woman is expected to remain completely calm as armed white supremacist thugs try to forcibly open her car door but an ICE agent is allowed to panic and shoot someone in the head three times from a foot away because he “felt threatened”

Not to mention all the people, mostly Black and brown, who have died while in ICE's custody. Many of them died from medical care being withheld from them too. I am begging people to pay attention, this has been happening while a lot of you looked away and didn't care.

Seeing ppl only discuss how they killed a white US citizen in broad daylight and how “bold they’re getting now” and it just becomes more & more apparent that because a lot of victims of ICE were nonwhite some of yall were just fine with complacency unfortunately

The first two weeks of work on building Phoenix Library, the first library in Gaza after the genocide. An empty space, learning once more how to breathe. We build deliberately, with tired hands and a quiet, unwavering conviction that knowledge still belongs here. Thank you to our friends, and to everyone who believes in this project and chooses to walk this path with us. These images document our first two weeks. What lies ahead is more.. and more beautiful. I ask everyone to join us in building the first library in Gaza after the genocide through the campaign link. chuffed.org/project/firstg…
