The premise behind the extraordinary AI investment wave is this: the only technology that will matter is AI. All other technology will be subsumed by AI because they can all be reinvented and vastly improved by a powerful enough AI. For example, AI will help find solutions to climate change. AI will help find medicines to cure cancer. AI will help solve the housing affordability problem in cities. AI will help us end war (okay, may be this one is my hallucination!) If you accept the fundamental premise and the concrete examples listed above, the only technology worth working on is AI. Do you accept the premise?

Singapore's extraordinary success against corruption isn't from the death penalty (which it reserves for drug trafficking, murder etc.), but from Lee Kuan Yew's combination of high civil servant salaries, strict enforcement via CPIB, meritocracy, and zero tolerance with transparency. Harsh punishments help in China but work best when paired with institutions that make honesty the rational choice. LKY's real lesson for India (and others) is building systems where corruption becomes both risky and unnecessary.

He was the first to demonstrate that a Chinese majority, Chinese governed state could fully develop. Deng Xiaoping had him as an advisor.

That Zoho story is gold, I've seen friends do the exact same dance with Microsoft and suddenly get "special pricing" the moment they mention alternatives. Saved them lakhs.Chinese open-source pushing the frontier is actually good news for the rest of us. No more one-sided gatekeeping. Excited to hear more about BharatGen, if IIT Bombay is making real progress, India's AI story is going to surprise everyone in the next couple of years.

Anthropic's latest models available worldwide. In other words, Chinese open source models posed a serious enough threat to market share. In a different context, an Indian customer of some of our products told me recently "A big Microsoft Office license renewal came up and they hiked the price drastically. We told them we are looking at the Zoho office suite and they dropped the price by 90%" - he thanked me for saving them big money, even without buying our office suite. If you are facing renewal of Microsoft Office license, I suggest you mention Zoho. Some history: Microsoft is a convicted monoplist by a US Federal Court (April 2000) and the monopoly finding but not the suggested remedy was upheld by the U.S Court of Appeals (DC circuit) in 2001. Microsoft has a long illustrious history of milking the customer dry (see the AI link below for details). Competition is always important. The fact that American AI models have serious competition from China is important for India and other countries. Finally, I am now confident that India will catch up in AI models. There is no reason to be despondent. There are multiple efforts going on in academia and industry and the cost to train AI models is starting to fall. Recently I met people from the BharatGen team (IIT Bombay) and they are making great progress. I will write more about BharatGen soon.

TN's temples, trade history, and coastal edge gave us a head start now the challenge is building on that foundation with honest governance instead of recycling old ideologies. What steps do you see as key to reviving that Kamarajar spirit today?

Tamil Nadu has always had many natural advantages due to its history (Mughal empire did not quite reach here and that is why our temples survived) and geography (historic sea faring and trading culture). A similar distinction applies to coastal China vs inland China and coastal China has developed much faster. It was Kamarajar who started the noon meals scheme and broad-based our education - so much of free schooling exists due to him. He laid the foundation for our literacy revolution. He was also absolutely uncorruptable.

The Soviet Union collapsed abruptly in 1990. It was a super power that looked strong until then. The collapse was so abrupt, it was not anticipated even by the United States, the major ideological and super power adversary of the Soviets. The Soviet system was built on deceit and lies. It had gone on for so long, their own senior leaders deluded themselves. The "revolutionary" leaders lived in extreme luxury and were cut off from the masses they were supposed to represent. They had successfully jailed all dissidents so there was no one left to tell them the truth. This kind of thing can happen to any large organization, business or political. The worst lie is the lie we tell ourselves, when we start to believe in that lie. Collapse is the collapse of the lie and since we believed in it ourselves, we are at a total loss of comprehension. I am sure there is absolutely no resemblance to the ideological collapse we witnessed in contemporary Tamil Nadu. Purely my imagination, I assure you.
