Life is beautiful not because of the things we see or the things we do. Life is beautiful because of the people we meet.

@sushi24girl After they’ve had lots of modeling and understand how success criteria can be used, students definitely can help create them!

A2 #ELMagChat It starts with having clear success criteria so kids know exactly what they’re aiming for - and then they can self-assess as they progress. It’s not done to them, it’s done for and with them.

Narrow views of what counts as demonstration of learning. What would happen if we partnered with kids as they pursue curiosity-driven projects to show what they know? If they really have learned they will blow us away & it will be meaningful, which is what matters.. #ELMagChat

@dodgeluvr1 @ASCD Part of demonstrating learning is kids explaining how their work exemplifies the standards. Perhaps I should have used the word “task” in lieu of “project.” These don’t have to be big, just meaningful demonstrations. Teachers can set parameters for tasks to help with workload.

@krisrouleau @ASCD As a tutor or leader of a small group, I love this idea. How do you make such individualized/open-evidence-of-mastery based learning work in classes with 20+ students and a wide range of foundational skills/work ethics...and still maintain a work-home balance?

Let student learning lead everything. Plan for learning (not instruction). Engage in professional growth activities to change student learning. Lead school improvement for learning. Cultivate a pervasive, passionate culture of learning and grading will follow suit. #ELMagChat

@SusanBrookhart @tguskey @ELmagazine And when kids are clear about where they are in the learning process and where they are headed, they can manage this process without teachers telling them what they “need” to do in order to have an “opportunity” to show what they know.

@tguskey @ELmagazine Good point. Retakes/re-dos should not be just "taking another shot" to see if the teacher likes this one better. Some teachers have students explain what they've done to learn more when they ask for retakes/re-dos. #elmagchat

#ELMAgChat Shouldn’t a fundamental goal of education be the development of self-directed learning whereby learners become increasingly able to accurately self-assess, rather than having to wait for a teacher’s grade to tell them how they have done?

@happyteacherguy Yes, & we have wide universe of feedback besides grades. The S who is not yet at standard needs to know where they are in their learning trajectory AND can receive enormous positive feedback about growth We can't mislead Ss about where they are based on their growth #ELMagChat
