Sources tell CBC the trigger for a criminal investigation into OPS Sgt. Robert Cleroux was a social media warning about him from 2023 — which was brought to police leadership by a jealous officer as Cleroux was about to be promoted this past November. cbc.ca/news/canada/ot…

Barbara Cleary and I caught up last week for the first time in a year, at a tent encampment. The 76-year-old with bipolar I disorder is once again homeless. How much have Ontario's mental health and justice systems spent to achieve this result? A lot. youtu.be/RyOlacYUdSM?si…

The officer said she'd charge Hanadi Mohammed's husband and get her family some help. Mohammed thanks her. In Sudan, she wouldn't get service like this. It's why she brought her kids to Canada — she knew they'd be taken care of. But nothing happened. cbc.ca/news/canada/ot…

It's official: Crown appeals for second shot at prosecuting Dr. Brian Nadler, who was acquitted earlier this month of first-degree murder and criminal negligence causing death involving four of his COVID-19 hospital patients in eastern Ontario. More: cbc.ca/news/canada/ot…

Search warrants/ITOs we fought for show: An officer alleges Eastway owner appeared to be trying to hide records from police. And @OttawaPolice made mistakes in ITOs written to convince judges to grant warrants, resulting in a possible Charter breach. cbc.ca/news/canada/ot…

It makes me feel lucky to be disconnected, socially awkward, industry-party-avoiding trailer trash who'd rather spend time with family — and friends I know I will never be expected to write about for as long as I live — than be fancy.

So much for our industry to grapple with after @TorontoStar's Munro story. Have been thinking a lot about elites in the days since... the subjects and sources we get too close to in some beats; the parties, the dinners, the glitzy events... how compromising it all is.

And paywall innovation. ***SUBSCRIBE TO NEWSPAPERS,*** yes. But for casual readers who want a big story, why not charge $20 or whatever for access to it and any related stories tagged with some unique identifier? Give people the good stuff they're missing. Some will want more.

Why? Prosecutors says the pre-trial judge ruled some Crown evidence inadmissible. And that evidence was important enough that the Crown no longer thinks it has a reasonable shot at conviction. "For all practical purposes, these rulings have decided the case against the Crown."

Dr. Brian Nadler's trial was supposed to start Tuesday and run 5 weeks. Instead, he's expected to walk free after a short proceeding in which the Crown will call no evidence, and ask for an acquittal on all counts (4 x 1st-degree murder, 4 x criminal negligence causing death).

I've heard from many about 74-year-old Barbara Cleary, who's been jailed, hospitalized and homeless dozens of times since 2018. This is a video recap of what's happened so far, how the story came to be, and what's next. cbc.ca/player/play/vi… #mentalhealth #justice #onpoli
