I enjoy the Northman for its honest portrayal of viking raids for slaves. Nobody in Hollywood other than Eggers would dare to show an honest historical slave raid. The callous murder of those not fit for work is refreshing to see. No morality shoved in.

I think there's a lot of confusion and misinformation about Zhilin's visa, H1B lottery, immigration, and why he left the U.S.
Zhilin had many opportunities to stay in the U.S. if he wanted to. In fact, I was on an email thread with a senior Apple exec (Tim Cook's reports) asking whether Zhilin would consider joining Apple. I said that he wanted to go back to his homeland. The response was, well, we have an office in Beijing if he'd like to join there.
But Zhilin was quite determined to go back and build a startup. I remember him telling me that if he didn't at least try starting his own company, he would regret it for the rest of his life. I respect that, and he was right.
Many of my international PhD students do choose to stay in the U.S. Of course the U.S. immigration process can be quite intimidating and uncertain, even for superstar PhD graduates from places like CMU.

The CDC says shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell has been linked to a parasite outbreak. The agency states shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms and served at Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia has been linked to the outbreak. People in those states are being told not to eat the lettuce while the investigation continues.

I actually tried this once. At one point in my life I had a lot of cash but not much credit. I also had no one to cosign a lease. So when I was applying for a cheap apartment, I asked: Can I just pay 12 months up front, and we can skip the credit check?

Malaysians are the Canadians of Asia.
Their capital is basically the world hub of globohomoism(I like it but it is sterile and barely walkable, its really just malls, cafes that look like the should be in Brooklyn, and the same condo templates copied over and over),
everyone has more loyalty to their ethnic group than the actual country as a unit, and they are now accepting tons of Bangladeshi and Nepali immigrants on steroids.
they have two far off provinces that are rich in mining and oil that are always threatening to fuck off and want more concessions,
and they're very insecure about their neighbors (Thailand + Singapore) who are more exciting or richer than them.

@mom_of_littles The expiration dates were started when plastic wasnt strong, and melted in the heat. These days plastic construction has gotten a lot better and the expiration dates really aren't that accurate anymore. If you feel like its fine, I would just use it.

Lying to young children about things like Santa, the tooth fairy, storks delivering babies, etc. etc. is an important (or even crucial) part of their intellectual development.
