The third of four Kansas Corn Commission research sites in partnership with K-State Plant Pathologist Dr. Rodrigo Onofre was successfully planted yesterday. This is the third year of a collaborative effort among Dr. Onofre's program and the Ohlde Seed Farms operation. The trials were planted at the Ohlde Seed Research Farm in Palmer designed to evaluate a wide range of factors. The experiments were tailored for the North Central part of the state to maximize yield and profitability under dryland condition. Factors being evaluated at this location include: —Generic vs. non-generic products —Humic acid —Hybrid × fungicide interactions —Product efficacy “Southern Rust is something we need to keep an eye on as we get into the season," said Dr. Onofre. "It's a year we're trying to cut cost, so if we don't need to spray it would be a big advantage for us."

#Plant26 update from Andy Hineman near Dighton: “We started corn planting yesterday after receiving .70 inch of rain last week. We will run hard over the next week to get our 4,500 dryland corn acres planted while we still have some of that moisture to get the corn out of the ground. Our planting populations will vary from 12,500 to 18,000. On our operation, we are looking at which rotation works best: wheat/corn/milo/fallow or wheat/milo/corn/fallow. Last year, we stored our harvested corn in grain bags and utilized our upright storage for milo and wheat because corn stores better in the bags versus the other crops. Hoping we need all the storage options again this year.”

#Plant26 Update from Camron & Vance Shay near Healy: “We have not put the planter in the ground for corn yet because of the dry weather, we did drill some cane today. It is drier today than it was last year at this time and would probably need to go back to 2013 to find drier conditions at this point in the year. We will push right up to the crop insurance planting date, as our later planted corn has been doing better the last couple of years, for our area we really need to look at extending the planting deadline. Our cattle operation, with the exception of last year, when the timely rains gave us a yield boost, has been the profitable part of the operation. I like corn. I like cattle and I like feeding corn to our cattle.” The Shay’s operate a diversified grain and livestock farm with about 1/4 of their acres irrigated, in Ground Water Management District 1. “We were supportive of the LEMA for GMD 1, over the last 20 years we have focused on using less water in our irrigated acres.”

#Plant26 Update from Paul Penner in Marion County: “Corn planting has been quite an experience. At first we had some moisture, then it was hot and windy and the ground dried out quite a bit. Moisture was about 4 inches deep so a lot guys were planting in the dust. We had 2 hail events and the rain was so hard that the ground was compacted, so corn emergence has not been 100%. We’ve also had wheat frost twice with temperatures getting below 17 degrees. Some people are replanting corn, some are choosing not to because it’s too expensive. So far what I’ve seen emerged on my field I think is a good stand.”

Today we celebrated the ribbon cutting of the newly renovated Blue River Valley Terminal near Potwin, Kansas! The 14-million-gallon storage facility will serve as a major biofuels hub for south central Kansas, expanding access to ethanol and biodiesel fuels across the region. Blue River Valley will initially supply Jump Start convenience stores, a family-owned company with nearly 50 locations committed to offering premium fuel options. “Blue River Valley marks a historic milestone in the biofuels industry, as the only facility of its kind,” said Kansas Corn CEO Josh Roe. “This is a win for Kansas corn farmers!” A big win for Kansas agriculture, renewable fuels, and rural communities!

On behalf of @kscorn we greatly appreciate your leadership on E15, Congressman! For everyone out there, don't believe the opposition from random trolls! This legislation is not a mandate, it simply fixes outdated regulations to allow for year round E15 sales. Fuel retailers will have the CHOICE to offer it and consumers will have the CHOICE to purchase it! With high fuel prices now, it's a GREAT choice!
Congressman Derek Schmidt@RepDerekSchmidt

I strongly support year-round E15. It’s a game changer for Kansan farmers and our biofuels industry. The House is expected to vote on it next week, and I look forward to backing it. This would be an important step forward and a big win for our producers.

In Kansas, great beef starts with corn-fed marbling and ends up delivering value far beyond the dinner table. While we keep 97% of our favorite cuts like brisket right here at home, there’s a bigger story behind every animal. Variety meats like tongue, liver and tripe are in high demand around the world, adding over $1 billion in export value and boosting returns for Kansas farmers and ranchers. It’s all part of a system that ensures every part of the animal has purpose and every bushel of corn helps drive that value. Read @JoshDRoe full blog post and get a downloadable version of his smoked whole brisket recipe (plus a bonus burnt end recipe) at bit.ly/4tW4b1t

Farming isn’t just physically demanding—it can take a mental toll, too. From markets and weather to long days and tough decisions, the pressure in agriculture doesn’t come and go, it’s constant. That’s why during Mental Health Month, and every month, it’s important to look out for one another. A quick call, a check-in at the co-op, or a simple “How are you really doing?” can make a difference. We’re stronger when we support each other. If you or someone you know is struggling, take a moment to reach out, learn what’s available, and start a conversation. For more info visit: kscorn.com/farmer-health/
