I'm safe. Family's safe. House is intact. Street/neighborhood is pretty wrecked & we have no power. V grateful we are able to stay at a hotel with the kiddo tonight. Hope all my Houston loves are OK 💓

I think often about how I've done a good number of class visits over the years, been on a decent number of editor panels. A beginning writer almost always asks about cover letters — what to include, how professional to be. Man, I'm not sure I'm the right one to ask.

@mag_gabbert Did this for 2 years when I started my PhD. I needed to step back & consider what my work was trying to do. & find ways to rest! Got back to it this past year & for 2023 I'm at 7 acceptances out of 33 subs, still waiting to hear back from 7. I'll take those numbers!?

Have you ever taken a whole season off from sending things out / applying for stuff? Like, you just let all the deadlines slip by bc you know that you need to be focusing on the work instead? Was it helpful? Did you keep your sanity?

@mag_gabbert I definitely also wallowed in self-accusations of laziness & a terror I would never publish again & fury that I wasn't able to adjust faster to living in a new city/taking a full load of coursework/fulfilling my fellowship duties/moving in with my partner & their kid/etc etc...
