They were buying yomogi mochi😅 The staff engage in mochitsuki, the traditional mochi-pounding process. Armed with massive wooden mallets, they rhythmically pound glutinous rice into a smooth, stretchy delight. Nakatanidou specializes in yomogi mochi, made with Japanese mugwort, which gives it a vibrant green color and a subtly earthy flavor. Each piece is generously filled with sweet anko (red bean paste) and dusted with kinako (roasted soybean flour). The result? A chewy, slightly herbal, and perfectly sweet bite of heaven. Two years later, I can still taste that fresh, warm mochi and feel the excitement of watching it being made.
