When Canada’s police chiefs are telling us that their investigations into extortion, child predators, human trafficking, and other crimes are hindered because of outdated laws, government must act. Behind every one of those investigations is a real victim — a child waiting to be found, a family torn apart by trafficking, a person living in fear of their extorter. They deserve better than laws that haven’t kept pace with the digital world. This is not a partisan issue. This is a public safety issue. OPP Commissioner and Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police President Thomas Carrique is calling on all of us as parliamentarians — regardless of party — to put politics aside and pass Bill C-22. Public safety isn’t a partisan issue. Giving investigators the tools they need to solve crimes in the digital age shouldn’t be either.

PM of Iceland Kristrún Frostadóttir: "I think there's a lot of not just leaders out there but also general publics in a lot of different countries around the world that are very thankful for the leadership Canada has shown over the past few months."

Asked Auston Matthews’ agent, Judd Moldaver about his response to the ruling. Here is his reply: “In light of the obvious severity of the play, I am disappointed and shocked the league would allow such a ruling. A phone hearing and 5 games is laughable and preposterous. While the process is set in our CBA, that this was the discipline is reckless and ridiculous. This decision results in a further loss of confidence in the disciplinary process for all players. Players and fans deserve better. The Player Safety Department should be suspended.”

Bill C-22 modernizes Canada’s investigative laws for the digital age. The last time these laws were updated, smartphones didn’t even exist. This legislation gives law enforcement the tools to tackle extortion, child exploitation, fraud and more, with judicial oversight.
