KAMUKUNJI MP @MPyusufhassan has castigated @Meta for curtailing the freedom of speech and the press following Facebook's censorship of Kulan Post over its coverage of Kenyans expressing solidarity with the Palestinians in the besieged Gaza strip. "I am really sorry about this," noted the former BBC broadcaster, who also served as Senior Policy Adviser for the UN Secretary General in New York in 2002 and the head of a UN news agency in 2006. He continued: "I express my support and solidarity with Kulan Post. This poses a significant threat to our democracy and human rights, constituting a grave violation of fundamental rights, including freedom of the press and free speech. "These deliberate actions aim to censor and muzzle the media, concealing the truth. Such unilateral and arbitrary measures are subjective, intrusive, and utterly unacceptable. "It is even more surprising that these sentiments are coming from those who advocated for the principles of democracy, human rights, equity, social justice, and the rule of law. The idea that they would practice these kind of double standards and they would deny these fundamental rights to the oppressed people of Palestine and their supporters is indeed preposterous." 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘆𝗮 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮’𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁? By 𝒀𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒔 𝑫𝒆𝒌𝒐𝒘 For too long, Northern Kenya has been overlooked by investors, its vast potential hidden behind perceptions of remoteness and underdevelopment. Yet, today, the narrative is changing. This region, spanning counties such as Garissa, Marsabit, Turkana, Isiolo, Wajir, and Mandera, is at the moment one of East Africa’s most promising investment destinations—offering stability, opportunity, and untapped potential. Contrary to outdated assumptions, Northern Kenya has seen remarkable progress in governance, security, and economic planning. Devolved County governments in the region have remained committed to creating investor-friendly environments through streamlined licensing, improved infrastructure, and strengthened security measures. Public-private partnerships are on the rise, ensuring that businesses can operate in a predictable and supportive ecosystem. This stability is critical for investors seeking long-term growth and sustainable returns. Northern Kenya is endowed with immense natural resources. From virgin fertile soils and expansive rangelands to wind and solar corridors, the region presents unique opportunities for diverse sectors. Agriculture, livestock, and aquaculture can benefit from modernization, turning previously underutilized land into highly productive ventures. Renewable energy projects, particularly solar and wind, are well-suited to the region’s geography and climate, offering sustainable solutions to both local and national energy needs. Equally important is the human capital of Northern Kenya. The region is home to a young, resilient, and increasingly skilled population ready to embrace entrepreneurship, innovation, and industrial growth. Investments in education, skills development, and technology transfer can unlock this potential. It will aid creating a skilled workforce capable of driving economic growth for decades. Infrastructure development has accelerated across Northern Kenya, improving connectivity both within the region and with neighboring markets. Roads, airports, and digital networks are expanding access to domestic and international trade corridors, making it easier to transport goods, attract talent, and integrate into broader supply chains. These improvements will facilitate business operations and also enhance the quality of life for local communities, creating a more attractive environment for investors. The sectors primed for investment are numerous. Agribusiness and livestock modernization can revolutionize food production and exports. Renewable energy projects have the potential to make Northern Kenya a national hub for sustainable energy. Tourism, driven by unique landscapes, wildlife, and cultural heritage, remains largely untapped, offering high returns for pioneering investors. Even technology and digital services can thrive in a young population increasingly connected to mobile networks and innovative solutions. By investing here, businesses can secure financial returns and also contribute to social impact: creating jobs, empowering communities, and fostering economic transformation. President William Ruto expressed optimism over the commitment of leaders from North Eastern Kenya to collaborate across political lines for the region’s development. He emphasized that the government is implementing programs aimed at addressing the socio-economic and developmental challenges in the region to fully unlock its economic potential. Leaders from Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera counties pledged to fast-track the implementation of key programs and infrastructure projects, including improvements in roads, water, education, health, agriculture, and security. UPDATE: Yemeni-based Houthis Threaten Fresh Red Sea Attacks to in Solidarity with Iran, Top Official Tells Reuters. Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis are ready to resume attacks on the Red Sea, a senior leader told Reuters. The group, which previously disrupted global shipping during the Gaza war, says it is “fully militarily ready with all options” in solidarity with Tehran. Timing will be decided by leadership. A prime target would be the Bab al-Mandab Strait off Yemen’s coast — the key chokepoint leading to the Suez Canal — compounding the crisis after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz. Renewed strikes could force longer reroutes around Africa, driving up costs and worsening global oil and economic turmoil.

UPDATE: The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on Wednesday declaring the trafficking of enslaved Africans and racialized chattel enslavement through the transatlantic slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity. Spearheaded by Ghana, the non-binding measure passed with 123 votes in favour, 3 against (Argentina, Israel and the United States), and 52 abstentions, mostly European countries. It was adopted to applause during the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The resolution condemns the centuries-long practice as one of history’s most inhumane injustices due to its scale, brutality and enduring legacies of racism. It calls for justice, dignity, healing and reparatory measures—including apologies and compensation—as concrete steps to address historical wrongs. [Additional reports by UN News]

Eid Terror Plot Foiled: Two Al-Shabaab Militants Killed, Four Injured in Mandera Border Ambush Amid Heightened Security Operations Along Kenya-Somalia Border NAIROBI—The Special Operations Group (SOG), an elite police unit, reportedly neutralised suspected Al-Shabaab fighters attempting to infiltrate the country from Somalia, killing two militants and critically injuring four others. The intelligence-led ambush unfolded on the outskirts of Sarira location in Mandera County hours before the Eid celebrations on Friday. Thd officers, backed by aerial surveillance, tracked and intercepted the group as they tried to cross the porous border. Confirming the incident,, the Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) Unit stated: “As Kenyans were engaged in Eid celebrations, our brave and resilient SOG officers undertook an intelligence-led operation against terrorists who attempted to infiltrate the Kenya border.” “[The] SOG officers laid an ambush for a group of terrorists on the outskirts of Sarira, Mandera. The officers, backed by intelligence aerial assets, waited for the radical elements,” the statement added. “During the assault, two fighters were killed, four critically injured, and the remaining Al-Shabaab members retreated deep into Somalia under heavy firepower from our officers.” No Kenyan security personnel were injured in the operation, CTP said. The Friday strike comes at the backdrop of Kenya’s heightened vigilance along the northeastern frontier, where Al-Shabaab has repeatedly tried to exploit festive periods and cross-border routes for attacks and infiltrations. Security analysts said the operation "marks another tactical victory" for the elite SOG unit in the ongoing fight against terrorism in the region.

PROF. Abdiwahab Abdisamad: Saudi Arabia is walking a razor edge, if it aligns with Israeli war on Iran, the conflict won’t stay distant, it will reach its doorstep quickly: missiles from Yemen, militias from Iraq and fighters from Syria. Beyond the battlefield lies an even deeper risk a reputational earthquake across the Muslim world. Many would see it as siding with Israel over fellow Muslim nation, a stain not easily erased. In this moment neutrality is not weakness. Its survival. [Source/X]

More Kenyan Police Officers Set to Return from Haiti Mission as Drawdown Continues: Kenya's Ambassador to Haiti Noor Gabow NAIROBI—Additional Kenyan police officers who served in the Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission in Haiti are preparing to return home, with the remaining approximately 300 expected back in April following a handover to Chadian forces. Kenya’s Ambassador to Haiti (and Consul General), Noor Yarow Gabow, confirmed that arrangements are in place for the phased withdrawal. The move forms part of a broader transition in the international mission aimed at combating armed gangs in Haiti. This follows the recent return of a second contingent of 215 officers earlier this month, bringing the total repatriated so far to around 445. The officers had completed their tours of duty in the high-risk operation, which Kenya has led since late 2024. Chad is set to deploy up to 800 police and gendarmes to take over key responsibilities, with the first group expected to arrive in April after training supported by European and U.S. partners. Kenya’s full drawdown is aligned with the evolving security framework in Haiti.

UPDATE: The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has sharply criticised The Standard Group, the publisher of 'The Standard' newspaper, for systemic "sensationalism and ethical breaches." MCK emphasised that Kenyans deserve "a bold and truthful media." In a press statement on Tuesday, MCK condemned the Group’s unverified front-page headline “ABDUCTED”, which claimed former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju had been kidnapped. Tuju later re-emerged safely at his residence. The Council called the report "irresponsible, a threat to national stability, and a violation of the Code of Conduct for Media Practice (2025)." It noted the headline was published without verification and without subsequent retraction or apology. MCK described the incident as part of a pattern of provocative, unverified banner headlines that deny the right of reply. The regulator warned that sensationalism erodes public trust and is commercially unsustainable.
