@nickmangwana @MuzvinaMedicine When Cimas Medical Aid Society owns medical aid, clinics, pharmacies, wholesale and sets reimbursement rates, the lines get blurry. Members still face shortfalls while subscriptions rise. Is this healthcare or market control? Patients deserve transparency independence& fair value

@nickmangwana @MuzvinaMedicine Medical aids are losing the plot. Members pay higher subs every year yet face growing shortfalls at the point of care. Now they’re buying clinics & pharmacies, squeezing out independent providers & controlling both payment and service. Who is protecting the patient? #HealthcareZW

We are coming up with a Statutory Instrument to stop Medical Aids from also providing services, as there is a serious conflict of interest threatening the existence of independent medical practice in Zimbabwe. Being the insurer and the provider has resulted in numerous challenges that we seek to correct. Some medical aids are fighting this SI by hook and crook because they have been benefitting from the clear conflict of interest and anti-competitive nature of this arrangement. We notice that the state media seems to have been dragged into this and have not even cared to hear the Govt’s side. We are very disappointed to say the least. Furthermore, on the question of authorship: an opinion must have an author. How can we have an opinion that is said to be done by a "correspondent"? Whose opinion is that? That would make readers believe it is the paper's opinion or a corporate-sponsored opinion. State Media has a responsibility to refuse to publish such. When a "correspondent" is listed instead of a named individual, the reader cannot assess bias, motive, or accountability. Is it the newspaper speaking? A hired public relations firm? An anonymous corporate interest? In matters of public health policy, where billions of dollars and the viability of independent medical practice hang in the balance, anonymity is unacceptable. State Media, in particular, has a duty to model transparency. Publishing unattributed opinions as if they were news or editorial consensus deceives the public and undermines trust. If an opinion is worth publishing, it is worth signing. Govt insists on this principle, and State Media should refuse to publish any opinion piece that hides behind the vague label of "correspondent." heraldonline.co.zw/opinion-zimbab…

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (@ZACConline_) has arrested Dr. John Collett Mawire, the Medical Superintendent of Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital, on charges of abusing his office and committing fraud. ZACC says the case relates to the purchase of a canopy for Dr. Mawire’s personal vehicle in July 2024. According to investigators, Dr. Mawire hired Tinofara Munashe Jokwi, who runs an unregistered business known as Zim Canopies, to supply the canopy. The canopy cost US$1,800, and Dr. Mawire reportedly paid US$500 himself. He is accused of inflating the price to US$2,100 so that he could claim a higher amount from the hospital. ZACC alleges that Dr. Mawire asked for a fake quotation for the higher price and instructed hospital staff to carry out procurement procedures after the purchase to make it look official. Because Zim Canopies was not registered, documents were allegedly submitted using another company’s name, Auto Quick Window Screen (Pvt) Ltd. After the canopy was fitted on 23 August 2024, Dr. Mawire is accused of approving the full US$2,100 reimbursement to himself without approval from the Ministry of Health and Child Care or the Provincial Medical Director. ZACC says investigations are still continuing, and more action will be taken according to the law.

MCAZ Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe MEDIA RELEASE ZIMBABWE JOINS 10th ANNIVERSARY CAMPAIGN FOR SAFER USE OF MEDICINES Embargo: Immediate Release Harare, 3 November 2025, - Everyone has a role to play in medicine safety. By reporting suspected side effects, you and I can help make medicines safer for everyone. That's the core message of this year's #MedSafetyWeek campaign, now in its tenth year. The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) is one of 130 partner organisations worldwide taking part in this campaign, which runs from 3-9 November 2025. Together, we're encouraging patients, families, and healthcare professionals to report any suspected side effects - because each report can help protect others. Medicines save lives and improve the health of millions of people globally. Sometimes they can also cause unintended side effects. By reporting suspected side effects when they do occur, regulators can take action to make medicines safer. Regulatory agencies around the world, such as the MCAZ, use reports from patients and healthcare professionals to monitor the safety of medicines and respond to any potential risks. Unfortunately, research indicates that only about 5-10% of all suspected side effects are reported "This means that we only see the tip of the iceberg, and that it may take longer to identify important safety issues. By raising awareness through #MedSafety Week, we want more people to know that their report matters," says the MCAZ Director-General, Mr. Richard Tendayi Rukwata. Common reasons for not reporting suspected side effects from medicines include not knowing it's possible, not thinking it matters, or simply forgetting. That's why the #MedSafety Week campaign was founded in 2016 to raise awareness of why, how, and where to report side effects. The 2025 tenth anniversary edition will be the largest so far, with 130 organisations in 117 countries committed to sharing the #MedSafety Week message in more than 60 languages. "By reporting suspected side effects, you and I have the power to make medicines safer for everyone. Speaking up could help protect someone else. It's not only doctors, pharmacists, or regulators; everyone has a role to play. That is a core message of this campaign: that medicine safety starts with you and me," says Mr. Rukwata. From 3-9 November 2025, everyone can help promote the #MedSafety Week message by using the hashtag and sharing social media posts from the Authority and other participating organisations. The VP organised, conducted and chaired meetings where it was agreed to repossess land which is actually no longer owned by Harare because it sold it in 2019 to the 320 residents! Here is one letter from Perm Sec Bhasera, revealing the VP's involvement.

How did a project that was launched by Harare City Council end up with residents being given orders to vacate the area lest their houses be demolished. What happened? Here is a story of power, corruption and abuse of authority.
