Israel has bombed Beirut for the first time since the 2006 war. This is a major escalation. Spare us the know-nothing buffoons and sudden Middle East specialists all asserting it is Hezbollah alone who threatens to “extend the war” For decades, Israel has violated Lebanese territorial sovereignty, attacked dense civilian areas, and scorched agricultural and forest land with white phosphorus. The assault on the South has been constant since October 7, killing many and displacing thousands. It is such that when my partner calls our family, the first questions is “How are you? And how is the bombing?” And tonight, in an alleged “targeted assassination” it stuck at the capital, home to millions of people, UN agency HQs, leading regional universities, and thousands of Syrian and Palestinian refugees. And like Gaza, there are no bomb shelters. Israel must be held to account for every violation of international law. Impunity must be resisted. 🇵🇸🇱🇧✊
