WHO IS THE PATRON SAINT OF NIGERIA- ST. PATRICK OR MARY? Irish influence runs through almost the entire history of the Catholic Church in Nigeria. This is because Irish Holy Ghost missionaries were among the first to evangelise Nigeria. As a result of that influence, in 1961, the Irish bishops working in Nigeria named St. Patrick (the Patron Saint of Ireland) the patron of Nigeria. St. Patrick was the patron saint of Nigeria until 1981. Then, in 1982 when Pope John Paul II visited Nigeria for the first time, the Nigerian Catholic Bishops consecrated the country to Mary under the title Our Lady Queen and Patroness of Nigeria, thereby making Mary the principal patron of Nigeria and St. Patrick, the second patron saint. The litúrgical celebration of our Lady as Queen and Patroness of Nigeria is on October 1st, the anniversary of Nigeria's independence. It is a Solemnity for the Church in Nigeria.
