The game of hockey is all about races and battles. 50% of the game, there is no possession with a race or battle. To be a good hockey team, and to develop smart players, the key is to coach not just the players who are first to the battle, it’s about coaching the next players there to support.
How quickly can a player understand their teammate is going to win that race and get to a spot of support? Or how quickly can a player recognize it’s a 50/50 and be there for second quick in the battle? Or how quickly can a player see that their teammate lost the battle and now we have to sprint to get to our spots defensively.
If you can incorporate these principles and a lot of races into your practice, you’re making your players smarter and your team better.

Jonesy was a tremendous coach and had an infectious personality, he cared about the game of hockey, his players and his family. Bob was courageous and made extraordinary efforts to raise funds and awareness for ALS research in Canada.
