It’s 2026, yet some Western films are still leaning into these old clichés when adding Asian roles. Feels like it was added to tap the huge Asian market, but the execution just recycles familiar stereotypes instead of offering fresh, respectful storytelling. Whether intentional or not, it comes off as lazy writing that misses the mark on meaningful inclusion. Hiring a Chinese cultural consultant or native Mandarin speaker could’ve easily avoided this backlash. Disappointing when representation feels more like a checkbox than genuine effort. I’ll be giving this one a pass.
