what the fuck is toronto’s cost of living?? the avg new grad swe salary in toronto is 85k cad u lose about 20-25% in taxes (federal and provincial) that leaves you with ~65k for the year, ~5.4k a month rent is 1.5-2k even with a roommate now you have <4k/mo food 500-1k (conservative estimate) leaving you <3k/mo basic subscriptions (phone, home internet, gym, utilities, property maintenance fees, etc will probably come out to 400/mo) leaving you <2.5k/mo commute to work? need gas? use the ttc? 3-500/mo now you have <2k/mo got car payments? what about student loans? buying gifts for people you love? think of all the birthdays, holidays, anniversaries. wb personal entertainment? MAYBE you’ll have 1k/mo leftover that’s 750 usd/mo this leaves little to no room for REAL wealth creation you can MAYBE max out your yearly TFSA contribution limit there is no realistic viable path for a lot of college grads to true financial freedom you could work your next 10 years chasing promotions and gradual 10-20% salary increases but your 20s will fly by you’ll build up more responsibilities you might need to take care of your parents. maybe you want to start your own family. now your monthly burn goes up. your expenses match how much your salary grows if you want to spend your 20s and 30s actually free of financial worry you need to play asymmetrical, exponentially compounding games NOW i turned 21 recently. this outlook on my future hit me like a truck. already 10% done my 20s i will be a millionaire by this time next year mark my words
