14 million stores → 330 million buyers = 1 store per 24 people in the US
14 million stores → 2.53 billion buyers = 1 store per 181 people outside the US
The competition density outside the US is 7.5x lower. For every store competing for a buyer's attention in America, there's one store competing for the attention of 181 people internationally
And the US stores aren't even competing for different buyers. They're all on Meta. All targeting 18-34. All running the same Minea products. All bidding on the same English keywords. The effective competition density for a US ecom operator targeting American Gen Z on TikTok is closer to 1 store per 3 people
Meanwhile a Dutch-speaking Google Shopping ad faces 3 competitors for 17 million consumers. A Polish ecom store using BLIK faces near-zero English-speaking competition for 38 million consumers. A Mexican store accepting OXXO faces virtually nobody for 130 million consumers
1 store per 3 people vs 1 store per 181 people. You chose the first one because everyone you follow on Twitter chose the first one. The math chose the second one a long time ago
