Great post from @ttunguz today: AI shifts from Jevons Paradox to Veblen goods. Frontier models price up, balance sheets become moats. But there's a third economist who may be relevant: Robert Giffen. Giffen goods = when premium prices rise, demand for the cheap staple increases - e.g. demand for potatoes. If Mythos-class models hit $150/M tokens, most companies don't need to pay up, many use cases don't need frontier thinking. They'll buy more of the potato: self-hosted open source + Google's TurboQuant (6x inference memory compression, released last week). Veblen for the 5%. Giffen for the 95%. The frontier goes up.
