My doctoral dissertation, "How to Delete the Dead", is now publicly available: proquest.com/openview/17bb7… I cover everything from pre-planning discussions about social media memorials, to the limitations of the 1-person:1-profile model of identity that manifest after a death.

For those interested in science & religion, what’s your favorite film reflecting on these themes? (I stand by my endlessly controversial pick of Contact and will not be dissuaded ;)

@slaneritchie Contact would also be my first pick, but Sunshine (Danny Boyle, 2007) is in second place.

@danieljonce Hi Dan, I'm on the team at Meta that handles memorial accounts. Please feel free to reach out to me if this continues to be a problem.

Peace to you Michael. (Or, if a bot, your controller). I can only imagine the type of inner turmoil you must be experiencing to seek solace in trolling. You are a victim of a broken system.

This shit again. Fun fact: my research colleagues at Twitter who were familiar with the needs and best practices for dead people's accounts? They were among the first people to be let go. @whatknows commented on this in 2019. Nothing was done. washingtonpost.com/technology/201…

Hmmm. I just had a bizarre experience, involving a global news organisation and a trillion dollar corporation. (I got caught in the middle, so... owch.) It’s not the sort of experience the people involved usually talk about in public… so I think I’ll talk about it in public. 🧵

@NicoleNuckolls Post doc salaries are definitely low, but Denver and other cities high rent is a huge contributing factor here. Campus should consider making affordable housing for grad students and post docs

The “free speech is under attack” narrative overlooks the bigger problems that content moderation are constantly fighting: violence/terrorism and exploitation of the most vulnerable. Our most basic safety is at risk.

When my daughter died and we posted her obituary people donated more than $600,000 for Dana-Farber — so much money (now almost $3 million) they started a new program for infants with brain tumors at the top cancer center in the world. TeamBeansFund.com
