@Megraptor Eastern Meadowlark are a great example. Despite a 70% decline in the last 20 years, they're still very common in the central US but are now much rarer in the east. They're now listed in several states, and serve as an umbrella species for east coast grassland conservation.

@Megraptor If a species is undergoing serious declines, those declines often become apparent at the edge of the range first. Funding for research/conservation in these areas can help keep a bad situation from becoming worse.

Is a species at the edge of its range "endangered" or "imperiled" or is it just rare because... that's the edge of the range?

@TheBirdist Movements are pretty infrequent once nesting starts, but driving along CRP fields at sunrise may still get you something. Good luck!

Question for my Kansas / Oklahoma friends: if I tried to find Lesser Prairie Chicken in say June, when they’re not on the lek, is that even possible or do they just ghost?

@darlingbirder Glad it hasn't broken yet 😂 Looks like one of the Nova Scotia birds is prepping for an overwater crossing...

New paper: lesser prairie-chickens, which are a hair away from the endangered species list, are largely neglected on federal lands in favor of intensive grazing practices doi.org/10.1002/wsb.13… (PC: Melody Lytle)

This is the first chapter of my Masters, and it was a bear to get published. I'm delighted to finally see this in print, and I'm hopeful that it can help spur some action towards protecting these marvelous birds (PC: Alex Eberts).

Without the contributions of habitat from federally-managed National Grasslands, LPCs are almost entirely reliant on privately-owned CRP grasslands. CRP enrollment is heavily driven by market factors, which can lead to LPC population crashes should CRP enrollment fall.
