@SpecialReport @melissadderosa @BretBaier Cuomo's stooges still flailing. Oh, is Trump "stuck between a rock and a hard place"? Maybe that's because he's a fucking moron who started a pointless war. Good effort in your audition for the GOP Melissa. Perfect time to join them!

@thomaschattwill Many of these kids have made the very reasonable decision to check out of the political arena. They don’t want to take sides on Israel/Gaza, trans ideology, BLM etc. The stakes are too high, so their best bet is to be oblivious.

A lot of the problems in the world right now can be explained by this video. For one thing, it’s a big reason why the US government is so unaccountable to public opinion. These are *college students.* A significant amount of the country is totally checked out and comfortable enough not to think it matters.

@larissaphillip If the Iran War is the tool you're going to use to convince young people that our country is great, I suggest giving up right now.

Appears to be under the impression that public high schools in America teach 16th century English literature. Or literature at all. (One reason they don’t is that for every thing people “should know” there’s some guy saying schools gotta start doing it.) Schools should make kids read books. They should teach science math history economics languages art and music really well (they don’t currently). That’s plenty. Every parent in America should be teaching how credit cards work.
Miles Commodore@miles_commodore

Every public high school in America should be teaching how credit cards work, how to get a mortgage, and what mutual funds are and how they function. 16th century English literature is great, but how about equipping our children with what they need in the REAL world.

@mr_saltz It's hard to take the moral high ground here when AFT and NEA have actively pushed this stuff. Can't mock people for being "late to the party" when there really wasn't much of a party before.

@Doug_Lemov Interestingly this year there are also several sessions on "teacher wellness," including stress reduction (use AI more) and personal financial planning (don't ask us for more money). Next year I'll propose one on basket weaving to see how off track they're willing to get.

@larissaphillip this is also why school choice / ESSAs are going to be such a disaster in loosely regulated states. A former student of mine who has (mild) social problems moved to another state and enrolled in an "online charter school" so that she never has to see other kids. Horrible idea.

Pretty sure Benjamin Franklin or Thomas Jefferson would figure out how to excel even in a AI fueled economy. Know how they learned? Through books. All the prognosticators that are in love with the narrative that “old fashioned education” won’t prepare students for the future don’t know what they’re talking about.

This is such an insult to parents and people who do the work in pre schools with high poverty area kids. She graduated from Brown in 2011 her only experience in ECE — ever — was assistant at the local $43-65K per year private school Wheeler while she got a Poli Sci degree @robkhenderson luxury beliefs hits new levels with this one How would she ever understand the facilities, staffing, materials needed and their budgets and funding — the ecosystem of staffing and training and hiring including that the people who will and can do this work have their own challenges w education and transportation and child care?

I was dropping my daughter off now. “I can’t really explain it,” she said. “But it’s like he took all the things that were happening around him & built this world that was a reaction to it… that understood it & what it might become. And it’s still so relevant. I mean it’s almost like… like…” I admit I should not have done this, but my heart was racing & I finished her sentence for her. “Like your education wouldn’t really be complete if you hadn’t read it.” “Yeah,” she said. And nodded. teachlikeachampion.org/blog/annals-of…

There is absolutely a case that the US government needs to exert more political control over A.I. as a technology given what its own architects say about where it's going and how world-altering it might become. But the best case for that kind of political exertion is fundamentally about safety and caution and restraint. The administration is putting itself in a position where it's perceived to be the incautious party, the one removing moral and technical guardrails, exerting extreme power over Anthropic for being too safety-conscious and too restrained. Just as a matter of politics that seems like an inherently self-undermining way to impose political control over A.I.
