Ode to the Coder of Yore I pace no more. Once, I wandered in loops of thought, Wrestled the stack for truths half-caught— A puzzle grim, a nightly war, Each bug a beast I’d faced before. I’d mutter hex and grep the logs, Pray to the docs, curse API gods. Stack Overflow was sacred ground, Where wisdom slept in scrolls unbound. I’d read a thread ten years decayed, And find my path in what they’d made. I knew my code. I felt it breathe— From init call to graceful leave. But now? The cursor hums. The agents write. It stitches tests at morning’s light. The function’s neat. The mocks are clean. The output? Matches what I mean. And yet… Does it work? Does it work? When traffic spikes and packets surge, When threads collide and queues emerge, When state gets weird and disk runs dry— Will the pretty scaffolds hold or die? I don’t know. The agent says it’s all okay, And ships it all by end of day. It passes tests it wrote itself— But did it test the pain I felt? There was a time I’d know the fault Before the system came to halt. I’d trace the cracks with careful hands, Predict the crash like shifting sands. But now? localhost:3000 blooms— A screen appears in silent rooms. A button works. A menu slides. A joy… I guess? But one that hides. I stare, and wonder: Did I write this? It feels like mine, yet something’s amiss. Emergent quirks, a flow unplanned, An elegance I did not command. And somewhere, deep within that thread, A nested clause I’ve never read— A ghost in code I can’t explain, A glimpse of someone else’s brain. I miss the grind, the slow ascent, The hours lost, but none misspent. When every line was understood, And bugs meant progress, in a way, they could. So here’s a toast to what was then— To pacing halls and thinking dens. To every coder, poet, sage— Who shaped each tab with quiet rage. And if some bard, in years gone by, Had written this with teary eye— You’d nod and say, a soul revealed… But alas, this poem was machine-conceived.
