One of the main conceptual mistakes I see biologists make is assume that just because some phenomenon happens in some organisms that it actually happens in most other organisms & moreover that the fact that this phenomenon can take place actually means it's biologically important

Hey, I've been promoted to Full Professor. Guess I need to sew elbow patches onto my flannel shirt? Looking back at my ~20 years in science, I've been fortunate to work with incredibly kind, creative, collaborative folks. Looking forward to continuing the fun in the next 20!

It is ONLINE!🥳 myxoEE.org is for those interested in evolution. It showcases past, present, and future evolution experiments run with #Myxobacteria. Social selection, microbial development, predation, evolutionary dynamics, and much more. Enjoy and share!

This is great stuff! Is embryonal-like multicellular development ancestral to animals? Is (crazy) convergent evolution due to the inherent properties of cellular multicellularity? It's fascinating, and it raises so many questions! x.com/dudin_o/status…

@wc_ratcliff Such a cool idea! I'm really looking forward to reading it in...depth. Science needs more Burnetti-like ideas!

Hi folks, I’m excited to share a whale of a tale (sorry, bad pun), where we engineer snowflake yeast to express sperm whale myoglobin, and explore how oxygen-binding proteins may have helped overcome anatomical limitations to early multicellularity. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

When it comes to publishing, a young scientist can listen to science twitter that talks about the DORA declaration, preprints, & post publication peer review. Or they can listen to ERC consolidator grant reviewers who mostly rewarded people w/ multiple Nature & Cell family pubs.

Imagine we make self-sufficient (energy-unlimited) AI's and then somehow disappear. Do the remaining AI's live happily and cooperatively ever after, or will they start to fight each other like we did?

@laszlognagy One of the best things I ever witnessed was a talk where ppl did scRNAseq, and then, because of too noisy data, they averaged signals across individual samples...

@tristamoeba I find this phenomenon quite interesting, especially given similar observations I made with myxobacteria belonging to the genus Chondromyces
