LSPHCB, UNFPA Collaborate to Strengthen Reproductive Health Services
The Lagos State Primary Health Care Board (LSPHCB) has welcomed a delegation from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on an advocacy visit to the Board’s headquarters in Alausa, Ikeja. The visit focused on exploring strategies to strengthen reproductive health services across primary health care facilities in Lagos State.
Welcoming the delegation, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa, mni, expressed appreciation to UNFPA for its continued support and collaboration with the Board. He commended the organisation’s contributions to improving reproductive health outcomes and reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to fostering partnerships that enhance access to quality health care services for residents of Lagos State.
During the meeting, the UNFPA Gender and Reproductive Health Analyst, Dr. Esther Somefun, noted that the organisation’s collaboration with health facilities and communities would significantly improve access to quality sexual and reproductive health services, with particular emphasis on women, adolescents, and other vulnerable groups.
Also speaking, the Deputy Director, Medical Services and Disease Control, Dr. Veronica O. Iwayemi, encouraged stakeholders to leverage the collaboration to strengthen family planning services by ensuring the availability of trained providers across health facilities.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Mustafa reaffirmed the Board’s openness to sustained engagement and collaboration with UNFPA and other development partners toward improving reproductive health services and strengthening primary health care delivery across Lagos State.

LSPHCB Receives PSI on Healthy Heart Africa 2.0 CKD Initiative
The Lagos State Primary Health Care Board (LSPHCB), on March 31, 2026, received Population Services International (PSI) Nigeria on an advocacy and entry visit to formally introduce the Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) initiative under the Healthy Heart Africa Project Phase 2 (HHA 2.0).
The meeting, held at the Board’s Headquarters in Alausa, Ikeja, was chaired by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa, mni, and attended by Directors and key management staff of the Board, alongside representatives from PSI Nigeria.
The primary objective of the visit was to present the transition to Healthy Heart Africa Phase 2, which expands the project’s scope to include the prevention, early detection, referral, and management of Chronic Kidney Disease. This builds on the successes recorded during Phase 1 of the Healthy Heart Africa Project.
Speaking during the meeting, the Team Lead, Healthy Heart Africa Project, Dr. Ohwoekevwo George, expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Government and the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board for their strong support and collaboration during the implementation of Phase 1. He noted that the first phase significantly strengthened hypertension screening, prevention, diagnosis, referral, and management across supported primary health care facilities in the State.
The Senior Programme Officer further highlighted key achievements from Phase 1, including improvements in service delivery, capacity building for healthcare workers, and enhanced management of hypertension and other non-communicable diseases across participating facilities.
In his response, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa, mni, stated that the CKD initiative aligns with the State Government’s strategic priorities aimed at improving health outcomes and overall health indices of residents. He reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to supporting PSI Nigeria in the successful rollout and implementation of the project across Lagos State.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment by both parties to sustain collaboration and build on previous successes to further strengthen non-communicable disease (NCD) interventions across primary health care facilities in Lagos State.

Directorate of Pharmaceutical Services Conducts Capacity Building for Newly Recruited Pharmacists
The Lagos State Primary Health Care Board (LSPHCB), through its Directorate of Pharmaceutical Services, has organized a comprehensive capacity building programme for newly recruited Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery within the primary health care system.
The training, held at the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) House, Ogudu GRA, had the Permanent Secretary, LSPHCB, Dr. Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa, mni, represented the Director of Pharmaceutical Services, Pharm. Shakirat Adeosun. Who enlightened the participants on the critical roles of pharmacists within Primary Health Care Centres (PHCs), as well as the importance of maintaining ethical standards both within and outside the workplace.
In his address, Dr. Mustafa stated that the training was designed to ensure effective onboarding, promote the standardization of professional practice, and align participants with established pharmaceutical services policies, procedures, and service delivery expectations.
In attendance were Directors of Pharmaceutical Department across the six health districts and facilitators
The Lagos State Primary Health Care Board reiterates its commitment to continuous professional development and capacity building as critical drivers for improving healthcare outcomes and ensuring the delivery of high-quality pharmaceutical services across the state.
This initiative marks a significant step toward strengthening the healthcare system by equipping newly recruited pharmacists with the knowledge, skills, and professional orientation required to deliver safe, effective, and patient-centered care.
