Major news organizations that have the resources (@nytimes, @washingtonpost, @wsj, etc.) need to put aside their rivalries and build a safe social media for rapid news dissemination and responsible discussion. Twitter isn't it anymore.

As a full-time faculty member at George Washington University, I call upon my employer to cease any investigation or punishment of Cecilia Culver. We are either an institution that values free speech and inquiry or we are not. gwhatchet.com/2025/05/20/off…

One of the proudest career moments was when our small but mighty team at 538 spent months hand-collecting a database that identified the position of every single Republican nominee in the 2022 midterms on whether the 2020 election was stolen. 1/2

I asked the @washingtonpost's new AI service about the journalistic ethics of their new AI service. So helpful!

@JayWltrs @DCCarViolence I got an open face version that covers my ears and has a built-in neck-warmer. My face is usually fine, it's just everything around it. (Though the neck-warmer can be pulled up to cover my face if needed.)

@lajoiemedia @DCCarViolence Absolute have for me—cold wimp. Some absorb too much moisture/no wicking and get yucky if commute is longer. Also gotta be able to easily pull down/up/over to expectorate.

Biked to and from Court of Federal Claims today for oral arguments. It sucked. Insanely windy; my ears hurt. Difference between me—a regular joe—and “cyclists” is those weirdos would think this builds character.

News organizations: it is contrary to your stated professional ethics to continue to publish on a platform directed by the whims of a man directly involved in the incoming administration, who has shown no hesitation in tilting the algorithm to suppress speech he disagrees with.

@froomkin The value of Twitter was the people. We can reconstitute the community in a place not under the control of a partisan like Musk. There's just no reason to stay and every reason to leave.

what reforms does Trump want?
𝔻𝕒𝕟𝕚𝕖𝕝, 𝔼𝕤𝕢.@Daniel22223333

@DeanBaker13 I always assumed Trump's real theory here was to *threaten* tariffs, making countries fear they'll lose access to the big US market, so they'd agree to reforms Trump wants, and we'd never have to actually impose the big threatened tariffs.

@jayrosen_nyu I just followed you on bluesky. Your insights have been invaluable to my practice of journalism over the years. And I've tried my best to bring some of those insights to the newsrooms where I've worked. I hope those insights remain available on some platform.

Starting Monday I won't be continuing at this site. Or as "press critic online most of the time." For a while Twitter was a way to do journalism education in public, for a public— and for free. I think I was effective at times in that role. I no longer know how that's done. 1/

It's not our place as journalists to say whether the right person won. That's for the voters to decide. The question we should be asking ourselves is: did we produce an informed electorate, equipped to make that choice?
