"The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit is calling on the Ontario government to increase social assistance rates, saying many residents who rely on them cannot afford basic living costs. The request comes through a resolution passed by the Health Unit’s Board of Health as part of the province’s 2026 budget consultation process. The Board is urging the province to increase Ontario Works (#OW) and Ontario Disability Support Program (#ODSP) payments and to tie OW rates to inflation. Health officials say the move is based on local data showing the growing gap between social assistance income and the rising costs of food and housing. Each year, public health agencies in #Ontario monitor food affordability under provincial standards. The health unit estimates food costs using the Ontario Nutritious Food Basket survey and compares them with local rental rates.
