Crypto as the next iteration of the attention economy People often refer to web2 as the attention economy, but it's actually a failed attention economy: rampant market failure and value leakage exists, with positive and negative externalities. Platforms and creators attempt to monetize their attention, but indirectly and imperfectly. Advertising, the dominant business model, is a broken way of monetizing attention: attribution is imperfect, and there's all sorts of other attention-derived value that can't be extracted from ads. New "attention assets" include memecoins, NFTs, and tokens (as well as new asset classes) that measure and capture the value of attention in real time. Users invest and own "attention assets" as a way to express their beliefs about whether that particular meme, media, creator, or network will accrue more attention and interest in the future.
