Some of what helped me is trying to understand the Jewish theology.
Jews believe sin is ultimately against God and God is the only one who can forgive sins.
Mark 2:5 “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
The scribes then say in Mark 2:7 “Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
Jesus doesn’t correct them. Instead he heals the man to demonstrate His point.
There are a lot of moments like that where he’s clearly telling the Jews that He is God, but we have to understand their perspective and theology to see it clearly.

Do the earlier Gospels mention similar? That was what confused me. Why wouldn’t the others mention Jesus calling himself God?
Also, how do you (everyone reading) view John in comparison to Mark, Matthew, and Luke in terms of reliability?

John 8:58 “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” Two big implications. One obvious, suggestion He is God and has always existed. That’s why He says I AM and it sounds like an unfinished sentence. Secondly, he’s referencing back to Exodus 3:14 when Moses asks God His name and God says “I AM WHO I AM” He’s telling those who are familiar enough with scripture that He is God.
