Welcome to 2025! For the new quarter-century, I am moving my social media activity mainly to the blue site, where my handle is peterjlanders. I have a post there on my recent job switch @WSJ. I’m also on LinkedIn. Stay in touch and happy New Year!

I would guess the “take it to the house” phrase was influenced by AAVE metaphorical uses of “house,” though I haven’t investigated this.

Here’s a new verb for me: “to house” = “to score a touchdown.” Ex: “If he hadn’t slipped there, he could have housed it.” Pronounced to rhyme with “mouse.” Shorter version of “take it to the house” with same meaning.

Levitt/Levit is a fairly common Jewish surname, e.g. Levittown founder William Levitt, but according to this site Leavitt with an “a” is most commonly a British/Irish surname. discover.23andme.com/last-name/Leav…

I’m told these restatements of the obvious are not accidental bad editing. Media people tell me Nikkei folks know the conclusions are mush and purposely include them to soften sharp edges and lessen any offense.

This time in the lead story on page 1, which is about SE Asia and concludes with: 地域の慎重なかじ取りが問われてくる “Careful keel-steering by the region will be put to the test.” Awkward double cliche. nikkei.com/article/DGKKZO…

Even Nikkei realizes 難しいかじ取りを迫られる(they will be hard-pressed to steer the right course) is a cliched ending, so this piece tries かじ取りは難しさを増している (steering the right course has increased its difficulty). Not much better imo. nikkei.com/article/DGKKZO…

Good point on alienation. Other parties are peeling away LDP support at both edges—the fledgling Conservative Party of Japan on one side and Dem. Party for the People among centrists. Not huge percentages but LDP needs every vote it can get.
Gearoid Reidy リーディー・ガロウド@GearoidReidy

As we get ever closer to Sunday's election, it's worth asking: should the LDP have replaced Kishida at all? It's hard to see how he would be performing worse than Ishiba, who not only didn't get a "new manager bounce" upon taking over, but is also alienating conservatives.

Asahi survey says LDP 200 seats, Komeito 25. Total of 225 (middle outcome) falls short of majority. Wide uncertainty band so still could get to 233, plus some independents could rejoin LDP, and it could add a coalition partner. Tense race. asahi.com/articles/ASSBN…

She was working at a nursery school in the early 1960s and wrote a children’s book called “Guri and Gura” with her sister. More than 5 million copies later (including one in our home), it’s fair to say Rieko Nakagawa made her mark. RIP. asahi.com/articles/ASSBK…
