Set up my new phone keyboards. Here they are in order of likely usage. Still can’t believe Apple doesn’t cater for Afrikaans and I have to use Dutch.

You are literally only learning when you are taking in input. Speak? Write? Say what? Write what? Is this witchcraft? Are you some kind of witch-a$$ motherlover? From what magic Doraemon pocket are you supposed to pull out stuff to say and write?

"But native speakers learn grammar, too!". Yeah. *After* they can already speak fluently.

@kubacki__ My experience is that if I've learned a language well, I don't need to be exposed to it every single week to maintain it, so I'm hoping to get to 10 languages at B2/C1 level and be able to maintain them. 4 would be Romance languages though.

@langdreamer How many languages do you see feasible to maintain during a day/week?

I’d be interested in the language routines of those of you who maintain/learn exclusively passively more than 1 language. How often do you do an activity? For how long? Do you just listen/read or do some extra activity?

@kubacki__ Also, I'm trying to keep improving my reading comprehension in Japanese, so try to read literature before bed, but only when I have time.

@kubacki__ I do only input. I have one main language at a single time that's at a beginner/intermediate level and I spend 2h/day on it when I can focus and watch video content. I listen to podcasts when walking/on public transport to maintain my other languages.

Don't ask people what a word means. If you don't understand it it's because you're not ready or haven't found it in the right context yet. Someone else's answer is a stopgap for knowledge, not real understanding.

@kubacki__ I never make flashcards for anything other than learning a new script. I tried it with Japanese in 2010 but it was just a frustrating experience and a waste of time. It was great to learn Kanji, though.

At what point making flashcards and reviewing them stops being useful for you and becomes more of an annoying and overwhelming task? Do you then leave it or keep going anyway?

@kubacki__ Nothing specific in terms of where I want to get. Just keeping up with my current 2h of exposure to Mandarin every day and letting it do its thing.

Who else here doesn’t have any language goals for 2022?

That test took two minutes and I think anyone at an upper beginner stage would be able to answer the questions correctly. Feels fishy. But thanks italki 🥲

@tokini_andy And I wouldn't play it exclusively because I would be missing contact with the actual people and culture that speak the language, unless you make a different game for each language that includes those things.

@tokini_andy I wouldn't play it if it: - Required me to read before I've listened enough to the language. - Required me to speak. - Required me to write. - Used translation or any other kind of vocab/grammar explanations to make itself comprehensible.

@mattvsjapan The vocabulary in the すもも one is a lot less obscure, which I think makes it a better example.

My girlfriend told me about a similar Japanese sentence: 「すもももももももものうち」 Not quite as perfect as the buffalos, but still pretty amusing. Language is fun.

Recently came across the interesting English sentence: "Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo" (Check out en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_b… if you need help understanding. Trust me, you'll be amused once you figure out what the hell the sentence means lol)
