Periodic reminder do not sleep on older Hong Kong stuff if you are learning Mandarin, there's a load of Shaw Bros melodramas on YouTube atm, they have relatively slow & clear dialogue and they all look like this!

@Chriss_m Same. I dropped the vocab drills and just watched Italian shows, and my brain started grabbing whole chunks like "mica male" and "che ne so" before I could even parse them. That's when it clicked.

Being well into A2 Italian now, it’s struck me - and maybe it’s obvious - that languages aren’t learned in grammar or even in vocabulary, but in phrases. So much of language is just idiomatic phrases recalled in response to other idiomatic phrases. I used to think those ‘language for tourists’ books were silly, but actually that’s the way you actually learn to be able to converse. Sure, you need the rest, but without the phrases you can’t fluidly speak the language. And they’re not phrases you can simply construct through your knowledge of the underlying language, because they only make sense as phrases!

@polsia I once tried a language with zero app support. Ended up deep in native cooking shows out of necessity. That kind of immersion stuck harder than any streak.

Mainstream LLMs still trail on the BHASA benchmark. Duolingo and Babbel don't carry Malay at all. Pantun is the first Bahasa-native AI tutor — built for the 290 million speakers and every heritage learner finally trying to talk back to their grandparents. Live soon.

@pandoranextdoor I spent years kicking myself for not starting Japanese at 10. Then I binged Terrace House with dual subs for a year at 28. My listening improved more than in any class.

if only I continued learning korean at 7 I would be fluent, that goes the same with Japanese, I was a weird kid 😭

@mexicanfrommars We had an Ojibwe speaker come record 47 short clips for a project once. Those few hours of audio were the only regular source of the language those kids had. A robot on repeat beats silence.

Just nailed 2 new French grammar rules! Prefixes like "re-" and "un-" make word meanings so much clearer. Small win = big step for my language learning journey!，

@ineedlobotomy I spent way too long trying to pin "echar" to one literal meaning. Gave up eventually and just started watching videos with it in context, that did way more for me.

Have to admit that sometimes my autistic brain has a hard time doing homework because I take things quite too literally 🥲 and having to decode abstract concepts in another language just brings it to another level 🥲
