The City Council meets on Thursday with a very full agenda. There's a Planning Commission meeting this week. On the agenda we have: - a proposed text amendment to the Unified Development Ordinance to create the Artisan Rural Enterprise use and establish a Conditional Use Permit process and specific use standards within the Agricultural District. - a proposal to amend Article 2. Applications & Procedures and Article 4. Zoning Districts & Use Standards to include FEMA required language for floodplain management and to allow 4 story buildings on property zoned Regional Business District “B-3”. Today, members of our Parks & Rec team along with our Tree Board, City Administrator Tim Vandall, and Council President Jake Kowalewski gathered to plant a Little Leaf Linden in Kenneth Bernard Park to celebrate Arbor Day. The city also recently gained accreditation for its Arboretum at KBP. You can find out more about the arboretum in the next issue of the Lansing Connection magazine.

The city council met Thursday night. Council President Jake Kowalewski presided in the Mayor's absence. Mr. Kowalewski kicked off the meeting with the Citizens' Academy graduation for the 2025-2026 class. He also read a Child Abuse Prevention Month proclamation. In official action the council: -continued a public hearing for a community improvement district in Town Centre (CID) for a parcel for a proposed hotel. The hearing will resume on April 16th at the next council meeting. -approved the rezoning of lot 8 in the Lansing Business Center. -approved the purchase of a sewer jet/vac truck for the Waste Water Dept. -approved a seasonal mowing bid for the Main Street right-of-way. -approved the purchase of a 30" asphalt planer for Public Works. With warmer, nicer weather come door-to-door solicitors. Lansing requires that anyone selling anything door-to-door have a permit. The permitting system allows the City to verify that the company is legitimate and is intended as a protection for residents.

Lansing Fire Department responded to a grass fire in Town Centre about 5:45 PM Saturday. The department extinguished the fire quickly, and no structures were in danger at any time. The exact cause of the fire is uncertain.

Update on the alley closure between E Kansas and E Kay Streets and 1st and 2nd Streets: The crew ran into some obstacles that have delayed the culvert pipe installation. The old pipe proved more difficult to remove than anticipated. The alley will remain closed until Friday afternoon (3/20).

The Planning Commission met last night, Thursday, March 18. They tabled a decision on an amendment to Conditional Use Permits (CUP) in the Agricultural District and voted to approve a rezoning request for a parcel in the Lansing Business Center. Tomorrow, Thursday, 3/19, the city will be closing the alley between E Kansas and E Kay Streets and 1st and 2nd Streets (please see the graphic below) for a culvert pipe replacement. All residents who usually park in the alley should be able to use the east end of the alley to come and go, but please expect some delays. Work will begin around 8:30 a.m. The city hopes to finish by mid-afternoon.
