When you train a neural network on images from scratch, the first layer learns to detect edges. The second learns to combine edges into textures. The third combines textures into parts. The fourth assembles parts into objects. This was not designed. It emerges automatically from the math, every time, regardless of what the network is for. Neuroscientists later confirmed the human visual cortex follows almost identical stages. Nobody told the math to rediscover biology. It just did. Which raises an uncomfortable question. Are neural networks actually discovering something real about the structure of visual information itself? Something so fundamental that any learning system, carbon or silicon, inevitably finds the same solution?
