@SalSaysWhat This sounds like Marvel trying to get some of the Absolute/Vertigo audience. I will definitely be giving it a try, but I'm kind of skeptical because these kind of copy tactics from Marvel usually don't go well.
That said, they did do some great stuff with the Ultimate Universe.

The no returns is why the direct market took off in the 80's and 90's. Companies didn't have to over print a bunch of books only to be returned by newsstand.
There are exceptions sometimes, but generally direct market don't do returns.

Kayla- I just spoke to the person that handles the CURRENT comics ordering in the shop- they clearly stated that they do not take returns unless it is a special case like you said above. That is why companies base the royalties on actual sales...and not what a comic shop says sold. they cannot return most mainstream dc or marvel comics.
