An unforgettable evening at @pborocathedral It’s the burial place of Catherine of Aragon but the audience gave the Boleyns (and me) a warm welcome. Giving a talk with the world’s largest dinosaur breathing down my neck was definitely a first 🦕 @WaterstonesPB @historywjackson

Poiret’s designs from the early 1910s exist both in real life an in the great artistry of fashion illustration, notably through the work of Paul Iribe. His stylised depictions have become synonymous with the garments themselves. Dress 1912 @madparisfr #fashionhistory

@thedudleywomen I have been a huge fan of Sir Roy's books and was thrilled to meet him on a holiday last year and enjoy conversations with him.

@lariburr I love this painting! The detail really tells his story, and that of his mother, despite her mental illness. And I know the portrait you’re talking of - I think it was Roy Strong who surmises that it was that portrait which was likely used as a reference for this later piece.

This is such a unique painting. I talked about it 3 times last week in the NPG. There is another portrait of him 1586 wearing a fine hat, ruff and cloak.

#OnThisDay in 1596, soldier, scholar and French Ambassador Sir Henry Unton died whilst serving on a diplomatic mission at La Fère, France. He had fallen ill in Feb 1596, becoming increasingly weak and feverish, "accompanied by the purples" (mottled, bruised skin). #History

@thedudleywomen Ah yes, I remember reading his mother became mentally ill. After bereavement remarriages were usual and I think it is rather lovely that both Dorothy and her second husband commemorated their first partners.

Here’s the resplendent self-portrait of the French artist Adélaïde Labille-Guiard (1785). Do you see the admiring student with her hand on the chair? That’s Marie-Gabrielle Capet ~ her own lively self-portrait is at R artinsociety.com/forgotten-wome…
