Albanian Women in History: A Tradition of Political and Military Authority 🇦🇱
The role of women highlights a fundamental socio-cultural contrast between Greeks and Albanians. In ancient Greece, female political authority was largely unthinkable, so much so that Aristophanes turned it into satire in The Assemblywomen. Even in Sparta, women, though relatively freer, were excluded from political and military power.
By contrast, among the peoples the Greeks called « barbarians », Epirotes, Macedonians, Dardanians, and Illyrians, female authority was a recognized reality. Women ruled, led armies, and acted as political decision-makers.
Olympia exercised real power, directing purges and controlling succession after Philip II’s death. Her daughter, Cleopatra of Epirus, ruled independently. Cynane led military campaigns and killed a rival queen in combat, while Adea Eurydice commanded troops. Phila was likewise influential in state affairs.
This tradition continued with Teuta, who led naval campaigns against Rome. In later centuries, Mamica Kastrioti defended fortresses, Nora of Kelmendi killed an Ottoman pasha, and in modern times Tringë Smajli and Shotë Galica led armed resistance.
Observers consistently noted this phenomenon. The Saturday Review described armed and dignified Albanian women, while National Geographic (1931) emphasized their high social and legal status. Conrad Malte-Brun even reported women leading battalions. Among the Arvanites, similar traditions endured. Beyond warfare, Albanian women held a respected place in society, often consulted in both public and private affairs.
If the Celts had Boudicca, the Albanian world produced a continuous tradition of female authority, from Olympia to Shotë Galica. Unlike isolated cases elsewhere, this model endured across centuries, reflecting a deeply rooted cultural tradition in which women could lead, fight, and govern.
