AFRICAN & BLACK HISTORY
AFRICAN & BLACK HISTORY@AfricanArchives·
Some Men's hairstyles during pre-colonial Africa. Long before colonial borders were drawn and long before European influence reshaped much of the continent, African societies had highly developed cultural systems — including distinct traditions of grooming, hair design, and identity. Across various regions of Africa, hairstyles were not simply aesthetic choices. They often communicated age, marital status, spiritual beliefs, clan affiliation, rank, or warrior status. In many societies, hair was considered sacred — a connection between the individual and the spiritual world. From intricate braiding patterns to sculpted crests, shaved designs, symbolic shapes, and elaborate styling using clay, beads, or natural oils, men’s hairstyles could signal readiness for initiation, leadership, or military service. Some styles were worn by warriors, others by elders, and some marked rites of passage from youth to adulthood. These traditions were not random or ornamental — they were structured cultural languages. Each design carried meaning within its community. Pre-colonial Africa was home to thousands of ethnic groups and kingdoms, each with their own aesthetic codes. Hairstyles reflected diversity across regions such as West Africa, East Africa, the Sahel, Central Africa, and Southern Africa. What one group wore differed significantly from another, shaped by climate, environment, and cultural values. Colonial influence and missionary pressures often discouraged or suppressed traditional grooming practices, labeling them as “uncivilized.” Yet many of these styles survived, evolved, and continue to influence modern African and diaspora fashion today. Understanding pre-colonial African hairstyles helps correct a common misconception — that African societies lacked complexity before European contact. In reality, cultural sophistication was deeply embedded in daily life, including personal presentation.

ICE chase woman to stranger's house—she calls police who tell her she "has to give her up." At last minute she refuses—orders agents off her property. "I'm Native American this goes against everything I stand for!" "They shot a woman yesterday... and you have hand on your gun! Get off my yard!" The woman filming was at home with her partner and 18 month old baby—with 3 more children at school. Police told her she would be charged with "harboring a fugitive"—even though the ICE agents had no warrant. The incident occurred in St. Paul, Minnesota. #DemsUnited

The CDC tried to remove remote work as an accommodation for disabled people. Working from home is a game changer when you’re chronically ill. Various unions fought back. There was public outcry. The CDC has reversed their decision. This is disability solidarity!

Not only was Novavax approved today... But all the COVID vaccines were updated today. It's almost like that whole push to freak everyone out about vaccines being taken away was just a ploy to clear out old stock. That being said, the KP.2 vaccines failed last year, and I can already tell you that the LP.8.1 will suffer the same fate. This is the year to get two Novavax doses if you have only received mRNA, and with a six-month shelf life, that just got a lot easier. This is how you get the best protection. If someone tells you it's not necessary, they are minimizing the risk of COVID and overstating the benefits of mRNA. And all that does is put you at risk. It's time to stop being COVID-conscious and start being COVID-safe. And don't worry, if you already got Novavax, then you only need one.

@Biff234523 @julezBee2 @DonEford Thanks for the info! Last year, I got one dose at Costco and a booster one month later at Walgreens. I tried Costco for the booster but the pharmacist would not allow. 🤷‍♀️

Nobody has them just yet. Doses should begin rolling out to pharmacies in the coming days, either later this week or next week, and then we’ll learn more about where. Sanofi is taking over distribution this year for Novavax, so it’s difficult to assume anything based on past trends. But last year, there was availability at CVS, Costco, Rite Aid, Kroger, Publix, Meijer, and select Walgreens, Walmart, and Sam’s Club locations. And even though there should be plenty of availability at those chains, definitely consider speaking to any local/independent pharmacies you have about placing an order. Now that Novavax is produced in prefilled syringes (making it much easier to work with and creating less waste), pharmacies are becoming more willing to just order a box for you if you ask nicely than they would’ve been in the past

I'm so sick of saying this. Stop getting mRNA vaccines for COVID. Stop getting mRNA vaccines for COVID. They are not vaccines; they are short-term immune boosters. Novavax is far superior in that it's an actual vaccine. It lasts longer, fights more variants, and doesn't wane the same. It creates upper respiratory tract protection, can fight persistent viruses, and reduces the risk of LC. The fact that we have people maligning that very available information is disgusting; these people are repulsive. They brag about creating COVID protections while actively lying and misleading people about the best protection. The COVID-conscious community is dead, because it's no longer COVID-conscious; it's stuck in a 2021 time loop. It's actively killing people in our community and creating more LC.

If one thing sums up the 21st century it's got to be all these default profile pictures. You've seen them literally thousands of times, but they're completely generic and interchangeable. Future historians will use them to symbolise our current era, and here's why...
