Fewer regional reporters in DC means important questions on issues that matter to people across the country won’t be asked in Capitol hallways and in the White House briefing room. That means less information for voters and a less informed democracy.

So sad to see this news. Salant is a tenacious reporter who has covered DC for years with an eye to what NJ readers need to know. He also has always been a key advocate to ensure regional outlets have the access needed to ask key questions on behalf of their readers.

I was going to wait until my last day of work but @MattFriedmanNJ beat me to it. @NJAdvanceMedia is closing its DC bureau at the end of the week after almost nine years and nine reporting awards, including the Robin Toner Prize, Dirksen Award and two NJ Press Association awards.

Scoop: President Biden will Weds. announce a White House conference on hunger, nutrition and health scheduled for Sept. in Washington. The last WH conference on food was held during the Nixon admin & led to major policy changes, incl expansion of food stamps & school meals. /1

This finally happens … immediately after my four-year-old and I have recovered from a COVID infection. 🤦‍♀️ Still very interested in seeing this play out, but the amount of faith in public institutions that has been lost due to delays and poor messaging is huge.

NEW: D.C. Health has lifted its indoor school mask mandate. It's now up to DCPS, charters, day cares and private schools to decide whether to lift the requirement. DCPS says masks are still required for now inside and chancellor will be "engaging our union partners"
