At the Allstate Sugar Bowl Chapter of the National Football Foundation / College Football Hall of Fame 2026 Awards Luncheon, presented by LCMC Health, five exceptional students were awarded Allstate Sugar Bowl college scholarships. Brad McElhany spent his career caring for others at @TouroInfirmary. Last fall, he became a patient. Just days before his 39th birthday, a sudden stroke changed everything. What followed was a complex, high-acuity medical journey that included emergency stabilization, a craniectomy to relieve brain swelling, a permanent VP shunt, cardiac monitoring, and days in the ICU. Then came the next phase. At Touro’s in-house rehabilitation unit, Brad began rebuilding his life. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy helped him regain strength, mobility, and independence. Tasks that once felt impossible, like walking, bathing and focusing, slowly returned. After discharge, he continued outpatient therapy, progressing week by week. Today, he is back at work, back with his family, and still improving. This story is about more than survival. It is about coordinated care, clinical skill, and the kind of environment where patients are treated like people, not cases.
