We are aware that today's comments from the Education Secretary, @bphillipsonMP, regarding a complete prohibition of mobile phones in schools may cause concern for children living with type 1 diabetes and their families. bbc.in/4jWxBIC We want to reassure everyone affected by T1D that official Government guidance is clear. Schools have a duty to make reasonable adjustments where necessary, including for pupils with medical conditions. The guidance explicitly states that 'pupils with diabetes may use continuous glucose monitoring with a sensor linked to their mobile phone to monitor blood sugar levels' and concludes that it would not be reasonable for a school to prevent a pupil from using their phone for this purpose. Here at Breakthrough T1D, we'll continue to engage with policymakers to ensure children with type 1 diabetes are safe, supported and able to manage their condition effectively.
