1. Tata now owns the rights to tune/modify the 2.0 Fiat Multijet engine. cartoq.com/car-life/tata-… 2. Global automakers like VW bill their Indian subsidiaries for changes/parts etc but there's a reason why that happens. For efficiency, the VW group designs stuff that works across geographies. That's why a single change done to say a part for the Indian market gets validated for multiple markets. And this is what pushes up costs. European cost structures! 3. Lot of OEMs now have R&D centers in India, and in time, these costs are expected to reduce. Also, many platforms are being Indigenized as the size of the market here grows. 4. The threat is not localization but the pace of product development. The Chinese are developing cars in 2 years, and this has so far been unchallenged by any automaker anywhere. Renault has made a start with their new Futuready strategy: cartoq.com/car-news/renau… 5. Indian automakers, with their quick pace of testing and validation, are best placed to take on the Chinese. This was what a product planner told me a few months ago, when we were discussing the rise of Chinese automakers. Europeans are finding it hard to cut down on this time due to multiple reasons (regulatory, working hours, etc). These are all complex problems.
