BREAKING: The U.S. government still cannot tell Americans how many U.S. citizens ICE has detained since Trump took office. Not because the number is zero. Because they barely track it. Investigations, court records, GAO audits, and watchdog reports all point to the same reality: Hundreds of Americans have almost certainly been detained by ICE since 2017. Possibly thousands. A GAO review found ICE arrested 674 “potential U.S. citizens,” detained 121, and even deported 70 during a five-year span. ProPublica independently documented 170+ Americans detained against their will. Academic researchers found roughly 1% of detainees in some ICE facilities were actually U.S. citizens. With modern detention levels exploding again under Trump’s second term, that could translate into thousands swept into the system. Read that again carefully: American citizens. Handcuffed. Jailed. Some deported. By their own government. And the federal government still cannot provide a definitive nationwide count. That’s not “law and order.” That’s a system operating with so little accountability it can disappear citizens into immigration detention and lose track of the paperwork afterward.
